Well did some R&D here and there and found out that optical cable comes to our apt/room/flat and than it will go into a ONT(Optical Network Device) and which will give some ethernet ports which is used to connect a router. Will our current router(eg. D-Link DSL 502T) work with this FTTH thing???
Below is the basic representation of an ONT device. MTNL is asking Rs. 1000 for such a device, think so.

Another image to give a better idea back of the Optical Network Terminal (Ericsson T063GA)

This ONT will be connected to your LAN card of computer or/and to your WiFi router for WiFi. So I suppose the modem wont be required. (So I think but I could be wrong). For the speeds they are providing it should suffice

As per the images provided they don't look like Gigabit capable nor the cat 5 wire is gigabit capable, sad setup considering/hoping they give us better CPE's !

If they will ever increase their speeds all of us would need to change our CPE/modems again :(

My 100th post !

karanaparikh the above image is just for representational purpose to give everyone a fair idea of how a FTTH system would work. Hope tomorrow MTNL's website has some information about the FTTH and more clear idea about the plans and cost of the same.

Ya roohan I know its for representational purposes :) i am also hoping that they update their website, tomorrow, links given stated that they will commercialize it in May.

"This technology uses optic fiber technology which can deliver world class Triple Play experience to the consumers the FTTH service relies on a Self-Healing Network, which is able to provide seamless triple play service, even in case of damaged of the optical fibre, the information will be re-routed through another line."

Brilliant,

regards

Lets hope for the best guys..Everybody has big question mark regarding1. Implementation of FTTH (Babus should be trained for new service..I know it will take time ?? :))2. FUP (WTF Airtel has inject FUP venom in MTNL management)3. QoS (People face so much problem on copper lines what will happen to Fiber hmm..difficult to predict every now then roads are dug for something)4. Plans

from 256kbps to 10Gbps  this is gonna be some bad joke now lolhey wtf they got fups and on top of that speeds are like 10MBps max......
