If you are lucky, MTNL might just forget to change the SPEED after the BILLCAP limit exceeds and u can enjoy 2mbps whole month!

While installing a new 256 kbps UL connection in February, 2009 they configured it as a 2mbps UL connection on their network. I enjoyed 2 mbps UL for almost 2 years for only Rs 599 plus tax per month.

I guess they realized their mistake when I downloaded over 100 GB in a month. As long as I was downloading under 50 GB per month, I was under the radar.

was trying to change the plan online here

MTNL Mumbai, Self Care Portal

but, the new plans are not yet added to the database :(

Even with the uploads counted, freedom 497 is a better plan than DSL748, as even considering an upload of 2gb, it allows for a download of 5.5gb in the same budget. Also, when you urgently need extra data, you can buy it @Rs.100/gb, whereas in the DSL748 plan, extra downloads cost Rs.600 per gb

Are the new Billcap plans available only for new customers?I am currently on the limited DSL 598 plan - where I get 2.5 GB & upto 2Mbps speed. With the introduction of the Freedom 497 Bill cap plan, my current plan makes no sense at all. I get more everyway with the 497 plan at a lower price. Why would MTNL continue with 598 Limited plan at all - no one will opt for it over the Freedom 497 plan.

:hysterical: yup I was on this plan from 2005 till July last year when I switched to 599 UL plan.
BTW Why is your location as Pune? I didn't know Pune gets MTNL broadband :D

Yeah please go ahead and switch to the Freedom 497 plan. Makes sense. The 598 plan is for the poor saps who opt for a plan, forget about it and blindly keep paying their bills every month. Believe me, a lot of users out there are like that.
My story is much like socrates too. I was on the 1 GB limited plan and switched to the 495 combo plan when it was introduced. Because I faced speed issues, I switched to the 599 plan. I continued to face speed issues from time to time and even worse, frequent disconnection. Then last week my modem was changed. Since then I am one very happy MTNL customer.
I will shortly switch to the Freedom 497 plan after watching my usage for a while more since my connection problem has been resolved.

Nope the plans are for both new & old customers
MTNL Broadband Internet Services Tariff Plans (for
existing & new customers) BILL-CAP based Circuit Breaker Plans(w.e.f. 10/03/2011)

DSL 598 was good for me as my DL was never over 2.5GB but i was facing a lot of over metering problems & senior level staff at the exchange told me they are aware of this problem but actually said 'I am not sure when we can fix it' :O hence my change to the UL plan.
@Daddycool About people opting for a plan & blindly staying with it, :) I know a lot of people who NEVER opt for a plan . They actually believe it or not ring up 1500 & say 'Muje broadband connection chaiye' that's all & MTNL by default puts them in a basic plan 'TriB 200P' whose limit is 500MB & when they consume that amount & get charged for the excess they jump around like scaled cats abusing MTNL about over billing :iomg:. Even on this forum there are a lot of members who have subscribed to MTNL Triband but never visited the MTNL site for more info & so are ignorant of the basic rules by MTNL
eg: About parallel lines/ Tel wire should first come to the modem then to the tel instrument etc. ::D

@dishboy. If you post incorrect info like your location. It might only waste time in getting a solution. if the query is location specific eg: Mumbai or Delhi.

Sorry I didn't mean ppl who opted for 598 before all these new plans came out. I was talking about those who will blindly continue with those plans now despite the new ones.

Totally agree.

I believe you mean splitter instead of modem. It should come first to the splitter and any paralleling should be down stream of the splitter on the telephone side of the split. But I couldn't figure what that was in response to. Didn't see the question.

:D I know, you were not referring to the DSL 598 walas. So no offense meant none taken. I agree with you totally on the blindly opting for a plan without knowing the different plans available.
I deliberately said modem as many modems have it inbuilt or in some cases MTNL does not give ( I don't know why, its happened in our colony), also did not want to confuse the uninitiated :D This a general comment as I have answered many questions where this is the problem where the member is unaware of this rule.

I'm missing the Night Unlimited Plan. Was a boon for me :( No Night Unlimited Plan for Mumbai. Expecting more new plans from MTNL :)
