I have been hughly disappointed by the MTNL-Mumbai IPTV adventure. It has cost me over Rs. 5,000 and left me with a bitter feeling. The facts ... 1. subscribed in Jan'07 when it started in Mumbai. 2. MTNL IPTV Service Report no. 0005 dt. 02/02/07 recording IPTV not working and adjustments made.3. MTNL IPTV Service Report no. 0282 dt. 16/3/07 recording blinking ASDL lamp and not working IPTV and adjustments made. 4. MTNL IPTV Service Report no.: 0050 dt. 26/5/07 recording changes made to IPTV components and "freezing problem continue". 5. MTNL IPTV Service Report no.: 2690 dt. 24/10/07 recording non functional IPTV and confirming collection of all IPTV parts and cables. 6. My letter dt.: 25/10/07 for disconnection of IPTV, submitted to Lallubhai Exc.-Mumbai under no.: 376 of 25/10/07. 7. Have paid connection fee of Rs. 999, monthly fee of Rs. 300, wireman charges of Rs. 500 and so on. From Jan'07 I judge I have wasted Rs. 5,000. The above does not show the hundreds of phone calls and unrecorded visits by the techie. They have kept on changing and adjusting almost as if they were working on a cutting edge rocket or missile. This is so laughable if it did not cost me. I did not get to watch even one of their free movies or any full program. My family refused to switch on and wait for the system to boot up and display a picture. This is because within a couple of minutes there would be 'pixellization' and 'freezing'. Always we were told that things would improve in a month. I was out of town for five months and family did not file for disconnection in June '07 itself. The general drift of the whole experiment was that the IPTV chaps would blame the MTNL and the reverse. In this period, my Triband which was giving good speeds (bandwidth) suffered often. So more phone calls and more time wasted. Finally, I was relieved of this financial burden and work order issued confirming disconnection of IPTV. The local exchange staff told me many have already disconnected. Can anyone guide me on how to recover my money?

Yes I had called Lallubhai exchange abt 5-6 months back and the person (i felt he was being honest) told me not to go for it right now as many have disconnected.overall i see mixed reviews and lack of starsports/espn is not tempting me to go for it. but i still feel its the best technology if handled and used properly.

MTNL will take some time (or long time for that) to adjust! i already feel that we delhi ppl are already facing bandwidth crunch here (not gettin more than 30Kb/sec man on Trib 199) have already cancelled my IPTV booking:P, but the Aksh guys keep calling at home to come to install IPTV! :madness:

Hi Now I have had IPTV for about 15 days and I think overall the product is a good one for anyone who has a single TV and is aware of the fact that he is using a technology which is yet to fully settledown. Which means he should be prepared for some occasional outtings - though I have not had any in the 15 days that I have been using it - based on the other peoples experience. What is the biggest plus (over cable) its definitely the picture quality. 2nd plus is video on demand (free for the time being), though here they really need to add some software heer. The killer app is Time shift tv but it is yet not fully functional and is available for only FTA channels. If MTNL and aksh really want people to prefer this over DTH they must add all channels to Time shifted TV and not charge more than 50 rupees for the service, I think it could attract people to IPTV.The biggest let down - i think, is, the break in signals off and on, the bane of digital tranmission and in this case also the less than perfect network of MTNL, still a lot of scope for improvement there. And they really must add an EPG. Overall I would give the product in its current state, 60 per cent marks for single tv homes who are paying more than 250 rupees per month for the cable.

I think the 'hopefuls' and the 'optimists' need to read my complaint (detailed above) more carefully. Gambling for paid service is hardly an option for any person. I wish they would find out how to get money back and then go for the gamble. :madness:

In continuation to my above emails from 22nd Nov onwards, I have the following to add. Even after disconnection of IPTV my triband speeds did not improve nor did the ADSL stabilise and continued to blink. Even after numerous complaints and followup, there had been no improvement.

Finally, today I visited my local telephone exchange. I have narrated the visit interactions elsewhere in this blog today, under the thread:

The interesting point to be noted is that starting IPTV means your triband speeds will suffer with their current technology and methods. After disconnection, one has to confirm that they have set your account for only triband and your SNR (signal to noise ratio) must improve to atleast 33 db. Only then will the ADSL not blink and the connection will be stable and also consequently speeds will be consistantly good. Now I am getting 450/350 for the past few hours.

I will post my results after a few days again. In any case, this IPTV is a non starter since I found today some more customers had visited to have the same disconnected.
