^Ya I read the readme.txt carefully. There are actually 3 types of tests: Short test, Long test, Acoustic test.I will also do the acoustic test just to make sure that my hard-disk is acoustically alright.

^I haven't performed the test yet as I accidentally deleted one of my software folders yesterday which had over 40GB of data :o.I spent the entire day looking for a good recovery software and after finding one of them, installed it and recovered my data.It was a harrowing experience! But at the end I could recover all of the files expect 3 of them which in my opinion is my sheer good luck :ohyea:.I'll burn the Seagate software on a rewritable CD and test it tonight. I'll let you know the result tomorrow :).

^I used GetDataBack for NTFS:
Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products

Although it took over half-an-hour for the software to scan my entire 500GB HDD, it recovered all the files pretty fast.

Frankly speaking I never expected the software to recover so much of lost data as I had used many other softwares in the past which yielded no results as in your case. But this software was as a godsend to me.

well the fact remains. if you start the recovery process just after losing your files, recovering is easier for the application because the sectors storing the deleted data are not overwritten. if you had waited for a couple of hours, you would have lost much more data.

^True. I had immediately shut down my PC and turned up my old PC to search for the recovery software.I even tried to connect my old HDD as primary HDD on my new PC but the OS (Windows XP) installed on it wouldn't boot up as the driver files on the old HDD did not match with the hardware of my new PC.In the end I had to install it on the same HDD from where I lost my data but luckily the data was not on C Drive :wewin:. Otherwise I would have been doomed!

any results?

Just ran the 'Long Test' on my 5 year old 80GB IDE HDD and the result came out to be 'Passed'. It took 35 minutes to complete the test.

I also ran the 'Acoustic Test' and found that my HDD isn't making any noise. All the noise is coming from the cheap Intex power supply fan.

Good to see that my HDD is still running error-free .

Again thanks for the software :urock:!

See here is where Linux rocks! You dont need additional software yet again, Linux comes with SMART tools :Dsmartctl -t long /dev/sdaRuns the long test on sda (first harddisk)smartctl -l selftest /dev/sdau can check for errors using this commandman smartctl for more options.u can even schedule such checks once a month automatically and even get email alerts :D
