that's the reason i do not like
Nokia.
exclusivity my foot. do not try to be like
Apple.
I don't understand this mentality. They purchased navigation assets from Navteq back in 2007 at whooping USD 8.1 bn, just to stand out from crowd and to offer their users some really unique capability. They had put another billions in Nokia Maps (Ovi Maps of that time) project by now and today, it is a only single navigation software on earth offering: online, offline maps (now in 3D as well), offline turn by turn navigation with voice guidance in many supported languages (allows in own voice as well), location based services like Check in, burp, weather, lonely planet, trip adviser and many more integrated in maps. Many services are unique to Nokia's navigation system.
They were all exclusive to Nokia till the introduction of Nokia drive (turn by turn voice assistance and related services) as a separate application from Nokia maps.
They announced back in July that they want to make Nokia maps available for not just other WP OEM's but to all OSs. Since then, maps.nokia.com is offering as many mapping features possible (based on HTML5 web platform) to other OSs including iOS. Nokia Maps as a application (same as on Nokia devices itself) is now available in WP marketplace, but they want to keep Nokia Drive exclusive to themselves. I don't think its wrong. Every company want to differentiate itself and UIs, custom skins may not always be only differentiating factors.
BTW, just go to
Nokia Maps 3D from your PC to see what Nokia is upto in mapping at this moment. They are miles away than competition when they are offering these 3D maps along with turn by turn voice guided navigation without requiring an internet connection, at completely free of cost and they want to keep it EXCLUSIVE to Nokia for a time being, nothing wrong here.
