So as I have been discussing in some other thread. I am planning to purchase new PC.

But before that I am just testing the old PC which I almost NEVER used. (harddisk used only for 45 hours in total)

I started this PC after like 8-9 years. But it looks completely brand new.

It has 3 fans in total. CPU Fan, Cabinet fan and PSU fan.

Here is what happens - randomly:
  1. I press power button, all fans start and switch off in 2-3 seconds (without beep sound)
  2. I press power button, all fans start and switch off after 5-10 seconds (after beep sound)
  3. I press power button, all fans start and OS boots (and then switches off from 2 mins to 1 hour)
  4. After switching off, it does not restart by pressing power button OR pressing reset button
  5. To restart either I have to turn off/on wall switch OR press power button for 7-8 seconds, release it and then press it again.
I was able to install Linux yesterday and then it stayed on for almost 1 hours (or may be little less) and then switched off directly.

I believe it is SMPS problem but just wanted to ask if there could be any other reason, like motherboard going bad etc.?

Thank you.

Photos attached - in case someone wants to have a look.

I dont have spare SMPS. :(

Is there any way I can confirm if SMPS is bad or motherboard?

I noticed that keyboad and mouse shows light even when PC gets turned off.

If I buy a new SMPS, can the same be used on above motherboard and also for future motherboard that I plan to purchase?

If you can, try cleaning your pc....... de-assemble all parts from Motherboard....... clean it with a soft blower/ or a brush....... assemble it and check again.

As you can see from the photos above, the PC is already almost clean.

I removed memory, cleaned and re-inserted it.
i also removed CPU fan and processor and re-inserted

Only thing I notice is there is no cpu cooling paste. But that should not cause it to poweroff instantly. i.e. it wont heat up so fast.

It heats up very fast....... in a minute....

Do clean the motherboard also....... with a brush....

Ok so I may try thermal paste first. Any suggestions about paste?

Do you get paste in very small quantity? Like sufficient for only 1 or 2 CPUs?

If it was a thermal shutdown, it would give you a message in the next bootup that there was a thermal event.

But yeah, reapplying thermal paste is essential if you had removed and re-fixed the heatsink.

But then it should not stay up for more than 5-10minutes randomly. It should always shutdown within a minute
It is difficult to tell....... why it is up for 5-10mins......

I have also opened up a machine which was locked for 10 years............ it starts give thermal warning as soon as cpu usage crosses 10-11%....... I am not removing fan/ cpu as I do not have thermal paste at the moment.
