PHP for desktop applications

Hi,I am new to programming and not an IT pro, but as far as I know, PHP is used for developing web applications only. It is not used for developing desktop applications or standalone applications. Is my understading correct? Are there new ideas/tools being made available by the open source community to make PHP a good language for the developers to develop regular desktop applications (something that does not require a web browser or server)? Please let me know. Thanks a lot

The desktop application can be developed using PHP.
