I guess no one posted about this which has rocked the internet for the last 24 hours or so.
Apparently, leaked reports claim that US Government (NSA) has direct access to almost all mobile carrier networks and web giants. They record details related to all phone calls that take place in and from and to usa. And they have direct access to servers operated by tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Facebook etc.
Guardian and Washington Post broke the news within hours of each other.

Google CEO Larry Page has just issued an official statement denying their involvement in any such program: https://goo.gl/vXytF
Feel free to add other (useful and original) sources of information. If possible official statements from companies named in this scandal.
Apparently, all companies named in the reports have denied involvement: https://goo.gl/4mc2a

LOL. Mark Zuckerberg has also now posted a statement. Looks like he was waiting for Page to release a statement so that he can replicate it.
“You can’t have 100 percent security and then also have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience,” Mr. Obama said, repeatedly stressing that the lawmakers from both parties and federal judges were aware of the efforts. “You know, we’re going to have to make some choices as a society.”
Obama as the mouthpiece of the new world order.

as long as the VPN is based out of usa ur ok. in any case a vpn cannot magically encrypt ur gmail account ! the mail ultimately resides on google servers. the purpose of vpn is not to send secret encrypted mails. its just to hide ur tracks , let u bypass throttling or get around censorship.

Yup. There were some PGP plugins that worked with Gmail. You can always use PGP with a desktop client that supports it.

'You are being watched ' [] everyone knew this was going for a very long time but for some people unless it is shoved right in their faces they won't acknowledge it, as for those denials the PR and the legal dept of those companies has been working ovetime just look the same craftly drawn up statement from all of them., plus on top they cannot even legally acknowledge that the program is there. but whose fault is it anyway ! it's ours, i relly dont understand this genration facination with doucmenting every part of thier boring lifes on net or with carrying around cells which 1st they cannot even afford nor they understand what they are capable of. nobody forced anyone to put thier data on the net , we created a honeypot for govts which too good miss out on . the up coming tech creeps the f**k out me like google glasses for f**k's sake why would anyone in their sane minds record everything they see and do alos the new xbox one it's just creepy !! but they hype created byy marketing is hard to resist basically we are suckers for marketing and certain companies and don't relize the fallouts untill they hit us . btw indian govt was asking for the same thing from the same companies but when denied access they even tried to remotly get on, plus everything in india is already under blanket survellnece it is high time ppl woke up and demend change of laws.

Rather than face charges in the United States, Snowden has fled to Hong Kong. He plans to seek asylum in a nation with a strong civil liberties record, such as Iceland.
Americans are familiar with stories of dissidents fleeing repressive regimes such as those in China or Iran and seeking asylum in the United States. Snowden is in the opposite position. He’s an American leaving the land of his birth because he fears persecution.

America's newest Most Wanted :P
The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell.
The Guardian, after several days of interviews, is revealing his identity at his request. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection of anonymity. "I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong," he said.
