@DrStrange Thanks for the link. I now see that batteries for the jiofi is available on their site.. The jiofi unit at my place had a swollen battery during lockdown & was not in stock with jio stores.
I have been tracking the Jio Mesh device for some time and was able to order it today from jio.com website. The jio site does not seem to have a direct link to this product but google search lands on the correct page. Let's see if I get it. By the way, per specs on the product page, this device supports the 'easymesh' standard so third party easymesh certified mesh devices should also work with jio gateway.
So I got my Jio mesh device today. Here are some initial thoughts:
Setup is very easy. just power it and connect to the main router with a LAN cable and it will pair. No technical knowledge required. After pairing it can be placed elsewhere.
There is no LAN cable in the box which is required for pairing.
Pairing is easy, but placement is a pain. I was either getting orange (too close) or red (too far/disconnected) lights. This- I guess will be true with any mesh device depending on the complexity of your home/office. Finally after getting the perfect location, I'm happy to report that it does make a difference and I have good wifi everywhere in my home (its a 2 floor house- router on the ground floor, mesh unit on the first floor).
It supports both wired and wireless backhaul. It means that if you have an older jio router, then you could connect one unit with a LAN cable and additional units as satellites. But with multiple units (5000+ for 2) you are in the ballpark with other mesh systems.
Per Jio website, this device is EasyMesh compliant so third party mesh devices that use EasyMesh (though there are very few) should work with the jio router- though I have no way to test or confirm it.
This unit JCM0112 is compatible with Jio JC04032 (blue) router.
This unit is MADE IN CHINA. There were several links/articles when this thing was launched, indicating that this unit was made in India by Neolync electronics in Karnataka. I was excited about that but looks like Jio stuck with their Chinese suppliers.
That's all. It's ok for the price I guess. Will see how it performs over time.
Just now Booked from jio website for 2598 (including shipping)
How much speed drop is there??
Do
1. speed test from main "ont" and "mesh".
2. Wifi Auto connects to mesh and ont vice versa according to signal strength ?
Regarding the speed - I have a 150mbps connection. Jio router is located on the ground floor and I get almost the same speed (140-148mbps) on wifi (without mesh) when I'm in the same room as the router. On the room directly above the router room, I get about 100mbps (without mesh). The problem was in the area farthest from the router on the first floor. Without mesh either there was no signal or barely 1-5mbps. with the mesh installed, I'm getting close to 40mbps there. I guess a wifi repeater would have done a similar job but for the same price, I'm getting a mesh extender from Jio so it's not a bad deal. And you can always add more mesh devices later if needed.
If this mesh gives only less than half the speed, then we are better off with the extender devices. I was told that mesh delivers nearly the same speed as the main router. Could the placement of your device be a problem ? Maybe try moving it around and see if the speed improves ?
