Row brews over DTH set-top boxes
3 Jul 2008, 0303 hrs IST, Himanshi Dhawan,TNN

NEW DELHI: A row appears to be brewing between major direct-to-home service providers over interoperability of set-top boxes (that allow consumers to shift from one DTH company to another without changing the STB) that could jeopardise consumer interest.

Reliance Big TV Ltd has complained against an established DTH operator alleging that not only are the company's STBs not compliant with the latest technology but that the company was trying to block out bringing the revised norms.

Operators like Tata Sky and Dish TV use MPEG-2 which comply with BIS standards but have been accused by Big TV of using an 'obsolete' format. Big TV is using MPEG-4 format, a technology that will substantially improve video quality and save over 30% transmission bandwidth allowing more channels to be telecast.

Big TV — eying the competition's subscriber base — has complained to the I&B ministry that while its STBs can support a consumer who wants to switch to Tata Sky or Dish TV, the reverse is not possible. It has also asked the government to revise BIS norms and implement TRAI's guidelines.

TRAI's guidelines suggest a revision of BIS standards and that they be made applicable to those subscribers who are enrolled six months after the revision of standards. It has said that the existing subscribers need not change their STBs.

Complaint is fine, but hope they don't make us wait till the dispute is resolved:redface:

Reliance's concern at least seem to be justified, look at another news where Dish has complained that mpeg4 is violating BIS and TRAI norms, and that it is not inter operable. I don't understand when disshtv and Tata Sky are not inter-operable, what right do they have to question other STBs?

yes, they are worried because if they dont provide good customer service and value for money, customer might switch to Tata Sky or Dish while same time customer of TS/DTV will be not able to switch to Big TV due to STB problem.

Are they assuming that they will be not able to give satisfactory customer service or good service?

What you says friends?

If people are unhappy with Tatasky and Dish tv or like to get Reliance for a better offer, they won't be willing to change the stbs as it costs high. Tatasky and Dish tv should be made to unlock their stbs first. They are cheating us. STB is owned by us but they will change and lock its software at their will

Reliance is no saint. Their stbs are also locked at present  but it still the property of Ambani as he is giving it for rental.

Please see the contracts U sign with Tata Sky and DishTv for taking a DTH connection, The ownership of Stb may be with the respective company. They may have only leased it to U.

I believe if the digicard is removed, the stb will be unlocked. We had several postings earlier on this topic, I think.

TRAI has passed on this problem to Bureau of Indian Standards; it will eventually make a recommendation. If the technology changes to mpeg8, then reliance will sing a different tune.
