Rumored Reliance Jio Fiber Broadband Plans

Here in Lucknow, JioFiber is still stuck in initial stages of building infrastructure (only above ground wiring done). Even if the plans are announced 3 days later, it will be going to take a minimum of 1-2 months to get connections. In the meanwhile, thanks to Airtel still being stuck at 16 and low FUPs, a local ISP named Tachyon has been milking for the past 1-2 years and then ACT launched in March of this year with excellent plans. Due to Tachyon inability to venture in my colony, my locality block which has some 50 houses, used to have Airtel/BSNL in some 30 houses and almost 20 of them have switched to ACT and disconnected Airtel/BSNL, though I have kept both with now Airtel as backup. Surprisingly, ACT after initial hiccups has been up to the promise though ping times have been not up to the mark. Through ethernet cable, I am getting 100 download and 50 upload, while Wifi has been 50 both. When complaining about low upload on ethernet and bad pings, ACT people are saying to give them some time so that they set their house in order here.

Well up to now, ACT has been satisfactory. Initial months and specially when the rains started, there were 2-3 days of downtime but now it has been reduced to minimum. In fact, August was the month of zero downtime. As far as my neighbors are concerned, they are very happy with ACT.

I have already registered for JioFiber, but now I am hesitant due to past experiences with RCOM, the last being the Jio 4G experience, which I sarcastically call as Jio 2G has now made it like thrice or four times bitten and more shy. I am already thinking of porting my Jio numbers back to Airtel or Vodaphone now, from where they were originally ported. Due to Jio 2G experiences, my neighbors are also hesitant in switching to JioFiber.

Our usage is around 700 GB (1 laptop, 1 desktop, 3-4 smartphones in whole family) right now and I am FUPed on both ACT and Airtel with 2 days of the month left, which I manage with my Airtel 4G, which gives around 15-20 speeds comparing to Jio 4G speeds of less than 1. I also have learnt Airtel is also laying fiber in my colony and suppose they also raise their FUP limits after complete JioFiber plans announced, there should be no reason to switch to Jio. In any case, ACT will be main ISP and then the backup ISP to be used in downtime or ACT FUP period.

But since I am also fed up with Tata Sky DTH now, if JioFiber offers a good package for triple play, I will be tempted to move to JioFiber as second ISP and primary DTH and disconnect both Airtel and Tatasky.

I was tempted to upgrade my ACT plan to 1000 GB FUP, but better will play wait and watch game. Tachyon has also entered in our area now and there are wires every here and there. They have even slashed their plans such that now they are even cheaper than ACT. I am expecting a heavy price war in coming months and the winner should be only us, i.e., customers.

I can only say that JioFiber has been a little late in Lucknow to exploit the broadband market here. Unless their plans are very attractive and they buy out Tachyon, they will not find many takers here. Their main competition here will be now ACT since local ISP like Tachyon they will simply bully out.

This is getting better than Live reality shows........ On one end is the company whose motive is "Loot lo India" and on the other end is data starved customers who were mostly served 1-2Mbps plans........ now the customer is thinking/ fantasizing about 1Gbps unlimited plans@2K........ the other options are the local ISP+LCO combo who absolved the customer in the cities from these 1-2Mbps service provided by MTNL/ Airtel at a very decent price.....

What happens next will be fun to watch....

Comparing to what Reliance did in early 2000s, when Airtel and gang charged 5 Rs/minute for outgoing and 1 Rs/minute for incoming and then again in 2016, what Jio did in mobile data when Airtel and gang were charging 250 Rs/GB for mobile data, I do not think this time Reliance (JioFIber) has any surprises left to impact the market in that way as this time everyone was well prepared, especially in the fiber segment. Only Airtel and BSNL are not getting any lessons and I am expecting a huge subscriber loss for both of them in future in broadband market, but the JioFiber will mostly affect them in tier II and III cities where they were holding monopoly, though local ISPs are there already.

One example is Roorkee, where a local ISP named Fibernet has completely booted out BSNL and BSNL is just not worried about that at all. Now the fight there will be between Fibernet and JioFiber. It seems to me that for BSNL the only city in India is Vizag to provide all goodies.

I think if they work out the software part of it the Set-Top box bundling can be be a game changer. With TV, TV recording, cloud/normal games, video chat, on demand access. Many people don't have these or don't bother to get it so if its all integrated while saving money (and Jio has good ARPU) it could have impact. I mean Airtel still doesn't have a good cheap Android TV bundle that can be used without a Dish, people still get those worthless costly STBs

When you have limited FUP, you want that Unlimited FUP Orgasm.

But when you have Unlimited, you don't have time or content to download.

The max I am able to touch is 200-300Gb per month usage unless I have to redownload a heavy game like Rainbow 6. (Each download is 70Gb)

Looks like this might be the only BB forum in the world where people don't want cheap and fast fiber. The topic says a game of guess and people are taking it so seriously, defending Jio from providing 1 gbps and questioning customers ! Sheesh guys.

I somewhat agree with your last statement that people defend ISP instead of supporting customer here.

I really want 1gbps. Who doesn't want?

But not at the cost of network choking. Jio is not robust enough yet.

I am happy paying for 100 Mbps and get that instead of paying for 1 Gbps and get less than that.

Not denying what you said. A good 100 mbps is better than a shit 1 gbps, but again, we don't know what's to come. And all of us are guessing, and having a wee bit of fun. But then the questioning starts like a school teacher - what will you do with 1 gbps ? Use it, of course, what else. Have enough bandwidth that nothing feels choked while doing simultaneous stuff ? Watch porn, netflix and prime and download PS and Steam and Switch games at the same time, while video calling my brother at a different part of the world ?

The options are limitless.

My wish still remains. Fingers crossed. 5th Sept can't come soon ! :D

They are going to launch 1gbps and they are not going to look on this forum to throw at customer just because 20 people on this forum want something. So its not in anyone hand except for Mota Bhai.

1Gbps has no use if routing is fucked up.

If I am buffering on Twitch. (example)
