i very much know all consumer goods like tvs and camera do have some software in them.. :frown:what i meant to say is samsung is no software company like Apple and microsoft :wall:the froyo rollout for Galaxy s and samsung kies are some exampleslike i never have had problem with itunes and pc connectivity of my old click wheel ipod then ipod touch and now ipad with my very old PC. but this samsung kies is so pathetic.the reader and email app of galaxy tab are ipad rip offsbut then again i haven't experienced the stock android and i don't know wether even that slow/ the lag is on galaxy s or across android.. all i can compare are the quadrant score and neocore benchmarks which can be tweaked using custom romsgalaxy s is a good phone.. but i feel samsung tried to outdo themselves. they chose sophisticated A class hardware but their customized android version (*software*) is not at par with the hardware..

if i am to go by your way of looking at things... Apple is not a software company. they are a hardware company. google is an online advertising company. Only Microsoft is a primary software company out of the three. Samsung has created their own mobile operating system. And they are actively working on it. I consider that as a major achievement. Something that Nokia is struggling to do with their Symbian and MeeGo platform. Sony Ericsson has totally gone Android. Sony Playstation Phone would feature Android for example. In the end. No company has managed to develop their own software layer that has managed to impress hardcore Android fans. everyone wants to go back to stock android largely because of performance reasons. Sony has their own UI. Dell has their own UI (Stage). HTC has their own UI (Sense). Every company that makes their own software layer has this problem with slowness. You cannot specifically point out Samsung. And they do have a much better track record of releasing Android updates compared to Sony and in some cases even HTC.

ios ?? OS X ??Apple has complete control over the software which they make for their hardware.google has made space for itself in the software sector with Chrome OS and android.HP Palm is a software companyi haven't used bada and won't recommend it to anyone because samsung's fate in mobile OS industry.. i will put symbian^3 above it.i am pointing out samsung because i have a samsung phone.the playstation phone really excites me.. it's like a dream gadget finally coming true.you won't call Dell a software company just because of stage UI or Dell Media Direct and webcam manager which comes in some of their laptops

Apple makes their money from hardware. that is why they are considered a hardware company first. they do not sell their software for other hardware platforms. if you were a software company, you would want it to run on all devices possible. right? google is a web based advertising company. search engine is their second most important product. chrome os and android are both designed to get people on the web so that they get to see more ads resulting in more ad clicks meaning more money for them. this is the reason, these products are free. Palm is a failure. And that is why they are owned by HP today. HP would use their webOS in all kind of hardware products. but since webos remains restricted to HP products, it would not gain the same momentum as Google Android. or even Meego. symbian^3 is a dead platform. only Nokia is making products based on it. and even they are going to switch to meego next year. symbian would only power cheaper smartphones from nokia. their n-series and probably e-series would move to meego. nokia has already confirmed that N8 is the first and last N-series phone to feature Symbian 3. Dell does not have their own mobile operating system. they are just expanding into consumer electronics. and they are expanding into services too. because HP is kicking their ass in that market. Dell was the leading PC maker in the US market till a couple of years ago. HP is now much bigger.

Steve Jobs (Apple ceo) has been quoted saying that Apple is a SOFTWARE company, first and foremost..it's the software which makes their product a hit and they will never make it available to anyother company.they have the complete user experience in their hand.HP is doing the same as apple that is why they didn't adopt android because everyone has access to it.only Nokia makes symbian^3 but then again nokia is BIG.. in terms of market.sasmungs drops support for their symbian products from tomorrow.

Apple Is a Mobile Device Company

Update | 1:05 p.m. Mr. Jobs says there are 284 retail stores. At the online App Store, there are more than 140,000 applications, with a total of 3 billion downloads.

Apple is now a $50-billion-a-year company, Mr. Jobs crows. The revenue comes from iPod, iPhone and of course Mac sales — a majority of which are laptops. All are mobile devices. “Apple is a mobile devices company. This is what we do,” he says. He calls Apple the No. 1 mobile devices company in the world.

this comment is older than what you quoted"The big secret about Apple, of course, is that Apple views itself as a software company.... But Apple's fundamentally a software company, and there's not a lot of us left and Microsoft's one of them." - steve jobs

the fact remains, Apple makes majority of their money from hardware. and they remain a hardware company at core. :)

from what i see your quote is from 2007 Bill Gates and Steve Jobs | D5 Highlights | AllThingsD

my quote is from their ipad launch event.

and if you want to go to the past... apple was the first company to build a personal computer. they did not launch a software (OS) for some hardware build for another company. microsoft did that (for IBM). apple launched as a seller of mac hardware. microsoft started with the sole aim of providing software for ibm machines. apple on the other hand wanted to sell their own hardware.

apple never succeeded as a software maker. all their software for non mac platforms are crap in nature (itunes, quicktime, safari etc etc.) they have always wanted to sell more hardware and that is where they do well. software is just there to compliment there hardware. they have to develop their own software to distinguish their hardware from rivals. that alone does not make them a software company because without apple hardware, apple software makes no sense.

you can take it in the way of a limitation that their software is crap on windows. but i take it as they make A class software and combine it very beautiful design with the right hardware for that software having full control on software and hardware they have full control over the user experience (restricted in case of app store some may say) which makes their products best selling. they have ilife and iwork which are fun to use.. also mac's are good for people in digital photography.hardware looks are secondary though.. even bad looking poor design laptops sell in the marketand this is a the strategy HP as adopted this is why they bought palm. i read about rumors that HTC also bid for palm.
