If media would have been working independently in India, they Killings and roiting of kashmiri pundits would have never been crushed
This is overblown i only ever read about it on the net. How does the pandits story even compare to what we did to the muslims in Kashmir, or Sikhs or any of the other insurgency wracked areas of the country. You have no clue, do you. Do these people exist or not.

I have no clue either. I only get to find out from foriegn reports. Its not pretty. Insurgency is not pretty. When we give our forces the protection of AFSPA, they can detain or dissapear anybody on the slightest pretext without those people having any recourse to the law. Areas where AFSPA is in force are defacto police states.

Having said it i'm not in favour of lifting AFSPA in Kashmir because then everything we achieved will go back to square one. Its a pretty fcuked up situation in Kashmir :(

For about ten days, the Government of India’s Department of Advertising and Visual Publicity stopped advertisements to this newspaper.
It was only for ten days. How often does the govt advertise usually in the DNA ? anybody know

For a government to temporarily halt such ads to a mass-circulating metro-based newspaper like DNA is unusual.

We wondered whether or not it was linked to DNA’s dropping the Edit page, but a responsible and reliable official assured us that such was not the case.
Why did DNA drop the 'edit' page ? after the front page thats the next section i look for in a newspaper ie its heart.

Discreet inquiries with the minister’s office led us to believe the government stopped the ads for a limited time to, well, to teach DNA a lesson.
And that's all we know.

And then, during a general chat about the newspaper, she came to the point: she said that DNA ought to look at its coverage over the past few weeks and introspect.
So i suppose this is the clincher then.

The prime minister’s media advisor has privately accused DNA of an agenda against the government, and its Editor-in-Chief of being close to a political party in the opposition.
How interesting. I wonder whether the Pioneer got the same treatment too. Its editor-in -chief is a BJP RS member.

So is there a trend here or just a one off ? Is it just because of AH coverage or something else.

Its an odd situation and not too clear to me.

I didnt get u? Whose hate, for Whom? Congress' hate for whistleblowers, or People's hate for Congress?

Give more examples of similar behaviour with other newspapers. Until then i'd regard this incident as an aberration. To put it another way if i was the person making this allegation and you challenged me it would be difficult to defend.

Think about it, if you have a case, it would be a big thing. Do you honestly think the media will keep quiet over this. Man it would be an absolute shitstorm. Look its very simple if there isn't a trend then that editor is just blowing smoke. He can write whatever he wants in his column does not make it correct. Browsing over Aditya Sinha's previous columns they seem to be well written so this one might be a shot in the dark. Yeah, it feels fishy but its difficult to substantiate.

The TV channels have been hammering on about scams for over the last cpl years and i've yet to hear of them getting anywhere near the kind of treatement of what is insinuated here in this DNA newspaper. Of course govt doesn't do ads on tv channels so its a different matter. Still they can refuse to come on shows and that can queer discussions.

Was watching Nidhi's show cpl weeks back on NDTV and she said no congress spokespersons wanted to come on the show to defend the govt despite repeated requests. The impression was funny, never seen that happen before.

That is one way of saying we screwed up :)

Two major UPA states have changes allegiances - andhra(telangana) and tamil nadu(jayalalita). Results in rajasthan and UP will be decisive.

No wonder the UPA has blocked all cases against its allies. These "allies" are the only thing holding it in power.

India's problem is that there are too many lallu's and raja's in the parliament. Does anyone remember "sentinals" scary quote from transformers 3 - The needs of the many, Outweigh the needs of the few. Irony is that these lallu's and raja's will always extend support to the UPA 'no matter what'.

UPA gets ready to be nasty with media

The UPA government, smarting from the hammering it got during the Anna Hazare agitation, is bringing in a law to control the media. It will introduce the Cross Holding in Media Ownership Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament to prevent newspaper owners from running TV channels. This will have a direct impact on the Times of India group and the India Today group, both of which have TV channels. The Times of India is in for further trouble, as the 90-year lease it had of its iconic office in Mumbai has expired. The government is thinking of doing away with the lease system and make newspaper owners pay commercial rates for their premises, a move seen to be directed at Times of India. The government is also planning to let Wall Street Journal enter the Indian market, in the hope that it will give stiff competition to the business newspaper run by the Times of India group. The government is also likely to appoint a media consultant for Doordarshan. The names of Preet Bedi an advertising professional and Sanjiv Srivastav, earlier of the BBC, are being considered for the post.
Am happy with the underlined bit. TOI has been holding back the FT from making an entrance because it wants to hold onto 90% of the business newspaper market. So this article is a bit mixed, not sure how to interpret it.

This one affects all newspapers so it isn't dicriminatory. but there is a line there that sounds ominous..

K S Dhatwalia, additional director general, DAVP says "My only concern is that there are vested parties/people who are misguiding certain sections of the media. It is my request to everyone, however, that they should not pay heed to the rumours, rather they should clarify it with us."

Why does he care about this and why does anything have to be clarified ? so long as it isn't libellous then there really is no need for this sort of filtering.

However, a media observer, on conditions of anonymity, points out that whatever anomalies are there in the media today, the government has been aware of it from the start. So, why have they taken action so late? "Basically, the government of India wants to arm itself against the negative media reportage, so that in the future, whenever there is negative reportage by a particular media company, it (the government) will use the information in the balance sheet as a weapon to arm twist or gag them (the media owners)," puts forth the media observer.
Here you see the insinuation of arm twisting. So main question is why aren't media companies filing clean balance sheets ?

This latest addition in the renewal form has not gone down well with the media companies since most of them are private companies, and their balance sheets are fiercely guarded.

I do not understand why media companies will not file balance sheets. Don't they do that for taxes already. This article makes insinuations but does not help me understand anything.

Manipur is an AFSPA state, that is what Irom Sharmila has been striking to remove for the last ten years. So the situation there is different to states that do no thave insurgency issues. This article is not applicable.

Keep posting more articles ppl. The picture is still cloudy for me.
