Due to differences between sports channel ESPN Star Sports and Multi System Operators (MSO's), cricket lovers still don't know if they will be able to watch the India-England series, less than two weeks before it begins.
While one-dayers will have to be shown on Doordarshan as part of the implementation of the Sports Broadcasting Signals (mandatory sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act 2007, it is still wait-and-watch for the three match Test series, which starts from July 19.
R. C. Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software India, while maintaining it was premature to speculate, said "Our intention is to safeguard the viewers interests. However, we are not here to provide charity. We have given a notice period to the MSO's till which time we will wait for a response. MSO's had failed to comply with TRAI guidelines concerning subscriber information and payment issues."
However, MSO's feel ESPN is being unreasonable by expecting consumers to pay for a new channel all of a sudden. "These are pressure tactics played by ESPN. The launch of Star Cricket (ESPN's new channel) and these allegations are interlinked. Hathway has complied with TRAI guidelines, the dispute would be resolved by the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Authority." said K Jayaraman, Managing Director, Hathway.
Ravi Mansukhani, Managing Director, Incablenet, said ESPN was being unfair. "We have responded by providing the requisite documents. Earlier, the current series was to be shown on ESPN or Star Sports. Now they are just playing pressure tactics and want subscribers to pay for the third channel. The consumers were not willing to pay extra for the new channel."
ESPN is asking for Rs 28 per subscriber in non-CAS areas. As per TRAI guidelines, no pay channel in CAS areas can be priced over Rs 5.
