I have witnessed the installation of a dish and an STB. What they do is set the STB to the predefined frequency and get the signal strength in the STB display. Install the dish and point it approximately towards the satellite and connect it to the STB. Move the dish direction until you get a decent signal strength reception level in the STB (Anything 60% +) . Fix it there and connect the STB to the TV and you should be ready to go....I am not sure whether DTV/TS are doing similarly. Any insights?

i am new member to this forum. i have booked sun dth yesterday, but few people say rooftop is necessary for dth for clear signal. i am staying in govt. qtrs. so sun dth will work if we setup near the balcony / window.pls help me.regardsraamkrish - chennai

balcony works if it faces the direction of the satellite. otherwise it would have to be a roof top.

dont worry sun dth workers will take care of that ,if they cant fix in balcony they will fix in terrace .....wont charge for extra wire

Everyone does the same.. as everyone eat with mouth only

and you made a wrong point .. get the signal strength in the STB
display........ they cant get signal before installing the Dish and connecting it to STB
and other thing is they will connect it to TV and see the signal.. STB wont display signal without TV.

As in the case of Dish TV they came with a small handheld TV (mean a black & white one) which was connected to the STB and checked for signals, once they were through they install into the main TV. This is how it was done.

"Everyone does the same.. as everyone eat with mouth only ". I am sorry, the post was meant for someone who was not that intelligent and knew everything, like you. Just tried to share what I knew. Was that against the general guidelines?... No I think. .
I guess you missed the line from previous post "Install the dish and point it approximately towards the satellite and connect it to the STB. Move the dish direction until you get a decent signal strength reception level in the STB ". That clearly said that the STB should be connected to the Dish before you get the signal.
And the STB will display the signal strength, if it has the provision. It was an STB from Beetel. (I can get the make if you like ). It has an LCD display which shows the channel number and when you turn on the info mode, the signal strength will be displayed instead. You do not require the TV set for that. As mentioned in the previous post, I am not sure what they do for TS/DTV.
So, STB can display the signal strength without TV. Hope I was clear. :thumbsup:

ok, so they had beetel STB. b'coz right now all 3 DTH dont have the facility in thier STB to get signal viewable on their box.
