For roughly Rs. 3000, you get a 7-inch tablet with a resistive touchscreen. This makes the interface quite unresponsive and not user friendly. It also comes with Android 2.2 Froyo instead of Gingerbread. Currently, the student edition does not support 3G, only Wi-Fi. However, there are plans on launching a 3G model sometime in the future. You do get two USB ports so it should be possible to use a 3G USB dongle, provided they’ve added support for it. Some of the pre-loaded apps include Documents to Go and arXiv Droid, of which the latter lets you browse science articles on physics, math, etc. Another major problem is that it heats up really quickly even in an air conditioned room. This could be attributed to poor design and cheaper components. While the Aakash tablet reads pen drives, it will read file formats natively supported, which is pretty limited with stock Froyo. Common formats like AVI and FLV are not playable on the stock player which is something we’ve witnessed on most Android phones as well. You may think that this is easily remedied by installing MoboPlayer, but the harsh reality is that you cannot install apps from the Marketplace, which is a big downer. The battery life seems to be really poor as well, 3 hours isn’t exactly ground breaking.
Diving into the tablet’s internals, we come across even more disturbing facts. The components used can be purchased off the shelf, which is not really surprising given it was built by students. The worrying bit is the way everything is put together. Components and wires are held in place by simple electrical tape and the quality of wires appears to be cheap. The chassis itself is very flimsy and delicate so spending a bit more for that pouch doesn’t seem like a bad idea, at least when you drop it, all the bits will be in one place.
The tablet designed by students, for students; doesn’t seem like a very good investment at the end of the day. I guess there’s really no such thing as cheap and cheerful. Even though we’ve not tested it, it’s pretty clear from the video that you’re not going to get a whole lot of work done. We feel you’d be better off with some of the 7-inch tablets closer to 10K or even a netbook maybe. It’s more money, yes, but at least it will be functional. What are your thoughts on this?

AAkash...its not even worth of buying it at subsidized cost! @MAX24: we're not criticizing it due to its low cost! Yeah...we use 1p/sec call rates and i even used Nokia basic phone once

Resistive touchscreen, really slow processor...you know..you would'nt be able to play even "Angry Birds" in it without stucking! Forget abt watching videos uninterrupted! plus it comes from OUT GREAT UPA Govt! (sarcasm) If people like you and me buy this shite and think "oh boy! All tabS are like this only! The Aakash wouldn't start until charged for about five minutes. We're rather used to out-of-the-box power on; this device does not appear to hold charge for long even when switched off (it should have been factory-charged, for testing).
The Aakash Ubislate is assembled in DataWind's Hyderabad factory. The plant has a capacity of about 2,000 units a month, to be "eventually" ramped up to 100,000 a month.
And the battery is rated for three hours; we got a bit over two. The Aakash warms up in use. That means precious battery power is going away as heat.
So every school kid who uses it will probably need a charging socket in their desk. And that's not likely to happen soon. Leaving it to charge repeatedly in common areas is not practical, for a variety of reasons.
That's where you'd usually go to for downloading or buying apps, as with Apple's App Store. Instead, there is GetJar, a relatively limited service mostly selling apps for phones.
The tablet's low-end specs are probably a good reason to limit functionality and apps. But removing Android Market does mean no access to the hundreds of thousands of Android tablet apps out there.

If I can get a tab pc somehow & if it is bearable instead of Rs. 4,000's mobile phone (actually price Rs. 2275 & 4000 is high difference according to me & tab pc with mobile features it means tab pc + mobile) then whats wrong in that if I can get tab pc + mobile in mobile price. It a idol deal, isnt it? I am ready with capacity of 3 hours battery if I can use phone as computer at basic level. They told that it doesnt support flv then I think there are five softwar which allow user install on pendrive & use by a pc. I think it atleast support it. Whatever if it not support it I will use it for basic need. Its good if I get tab pc in price of mobile. dont know you still dont like this. Its everybody's choice.But as opera post the source, I need rethink & check back quality of the tab pc. Thanks very much opera. I will go to demo before buy but this source opened many demerits which I couldnt find at demo time & raj too thanks.@ gitarNow I think you got my view.
