Moneycontrol >> News >> Business >> Are Tata Group's flagship unlisted cos making losses?

Tata Group's flagship unlisted companies are yet to turn profitable. It’s the companies in insurance, DTH, telecom holding company and the newly launched real estate company that are making losses.

The Tata Group is not to create wealth and many of the companies are very aggressive in terms of mergers and acquisitions. But some of this unlisted companies, which are into emerging sectors like insurance sector, Direct to Home (DTH), telecom are indeed bleeding. Tata AIG is one of the companies which was in news last week, when AIG was going through financial troubles. This company had made a loss of nearly Rs 339 crore in FY08 as against Rs 72 crore in FY07and in FY06 the loss was around Rs 54 crore. Its media venture Tata Sky which is a joint venture with Sky, is also making a huge loss. In FY08 the loss stood at Rs 864 crore for Tata Sky, in FY07 it was another Rs 815 crore and in FY06 the loss was at Rs 53 crore.

Also Tata Teleservices, a holding company of Tata Teleservices Maharashtra, is a listed company. But a lot of investors have a stake in this company including Temasek. This company made a loss of nearly Rs 1,813 crore in FY08, in FY07 the loss was at Rs 2,062 crore and in FY06 the loss was at Rs 1,871 crore.

Apart from these three big companies, there are other companies like Tata Realty and Infrastructure, which began operations last year. It's making a loss of nearly Rs 14 crore, it's joint venture with Fiat India Limited which makes Palio in India and does all the maintenance and servicing for Palio is making a loss of nearly Rs 89.7 crore. Apart from that, there is another company which is a R&D company located in UK that made a profit of Rs 12.8 crore.

Making Losses.. :OIt is because of the huge investments that they make.. Paying Aamir Khaqn Rs.6 crore adds to the loss..Stupid marketing, Tv advertisements and Tata ke 'bharose' da customer care(Translation:Tata's trustworthy customer care) are contributing to the companies loss.. No wonder employees are being sacked from the company. We all recieved a letter about the services, promising more customer friendly experience.. Each letter would havecost 10-15Rs, Considering 2 million that alone amounts to a watage of Rs.2 crores..Not to forget the fight they have in legal courts.. All for stupid reasons..Damage control after the ESPN case.. Everything is paid, and that is where Tata is losing money..Become the market leader and then the profits increase.. They have made a lot of investment, There are losses to be obvious for some time.. May be 5 years.. Mr. Ratan Tata has agreed to it.. "Any new DTH company has to work with the lsses for atleast 5 years, before they could imagine about earning from it." - he said.It can reduce the losses, and increase their goodwill if they offer what the customer wants.. I don't sympathize with the losses!! :|

But all this happen after march and this results were of before march'08, let's see their losses in 09 when thing you told will also include

Its not because of the above reasons. Its because of heavy subsidization of stbs to attract new customers. The losses will be even more in fy09.The dth business has very long gestation period for breaking even and its not a big surprise that they are making losses now.Its even more difficult in india because of number of players involved but the enormous volume involved should give profit for the winners in the dth battle.

its just losses on paper.

Well thier losses will mount with the competition growing and customers switching over to big tv and other new providers coming in

nope losses wont mount. market is very big, just like mobile market (even though it may be 10 times less, it still is big enough)
