Not sure, I thought some companies give few hours off if they want to vote and come and/or make them work on the weekend. I have a vague memory of opting to vote and coming late to office than work on a weekend... But not sure, maybe I was on support that day & went in the 1-10 shift.. (I am talking about 5 years ago here)

a friend of mine has a holiday on the voting day but the company is making them work on saturday to compensate for that.

Yup... preceisely.. My company on the other hand has declared a holiday.. No mention of any compensatory work-day.. Atleast not till now.

We have a holiday on 17th in Bangalore. A day of paid leave will be deducted and everyone is rejoicing over a long long weekend. 18th would be a off for Good Friday followed by Sat & Sun.
