Not sure about official definition. They had removed mandatory tie on Mon/tue last year I believe.

But people in my office were saying it means even jeans/tshirt on all days.

i never really understood why programmers and folks working in call centers or software testing or kpo have to wear tie and formals in office. if you are in sales or you are a project manager who has to deal with clients on a regular basis, then i get it. but for folks who are going to spend most of their time dealing with themselves on their machines, why not make their stay at work as comfortable as possible!

a cousin of mine is in IT division of deloitte. his work attire is so formal that he can actually attend a wedding ceremony right after his office.
a friend of mine is working in the IT division of a startup and what he wears to work is the same shit he wears at his home.

Well, its probably because the HR feels that when foreign clients visit they dont them to see people dressed up as if in a party...Though their own (mostly US) employees in their country usually are pretty casually dressed..

exactly! i mean look at any it company office in the west. you are not going to see programmers wearing suits working on their laptops :D

Thankfully in company which I work we can wear jeans and T-shirt everyday. Even our CEO and MD rarely come in formal dress :)
But in my earlier IT company they had strict rule of formal dress and shoes. My friend was stopped and sent back by secutiry guard for wearing sports shoes. But when I went onsite, most employees of my client were wearing casuals. There was one client-side employee in our team whom I never seen wearing formal dress in 4 years :D

In my company and all that I have worked in the past decade its been only for Fridays..

I myself don't usually wear them even on Fridays...
