you do not need to connect it through usb to check firmware.

i know but i am running this in bridge mode with a 3g/4g/wan router in front doing all the routing/upnp/dhcp work. so this one is hidden and need to connect usb in order to access it.

mmm it is not a wireless router. just a regular modem.
