I just discovered that the Gmail mobilephone downloadable application requires a data connection which is other than the usual internet connection! This after struggling for over a month to revive gmail on my mobile. :wall: The settings for this is different from the settings for normal browsing! Does anyone have any experience related to the information given on Google's website?
I'm getting this error: 'This program requires a data connection. Please contact your carrier, or visit the Gmail Mobile FAQ on your computer for more info.'

or the general help

Google Mobile

data connection is gprs/edge connection to browse in the mobile phone itself.. I have used the gmail mobile application in my K550i... and by internet connection I presume you mean using your phone as a modem and connecting it to your pc to browse internet in your pc.. if so, yes they are different....

Well I guess i have finally got the hang of it:thumbsup:. Apart from some general details, The handset-specific stuff below are with reference to my Sony Ericsson W610i. However, note the disclaimer, "..at your own risk.."
First a clarification:
By "internet browsing" I mean using the minibrowser in the phone. With this I can browse sites like Vodafone live. Also, Gmail mobile service can be accessed like a "webmail" service but it is way too messy and the labels are a no-no!
Instead, the Gmail Java "client" is a downloadable application that can be installed in the phone using the phone web browser (also see B below) from Gmail

And finally, the settings. Enjoy!
A. For browsing with the minibrowser:
account name: Vodafone live!
use proxy: yes
proxy address: 010.010.001.100
port number: 9401
username:
password:

B. For data connection:
(m. prolly what the gmail app FAQ refers to as a "direct connection")
Account name: Vodafone live!
Type of account: PS ( packet switched)
APN: portalnmms
username:
password:
login request: off
allow calls: automatic
IP address:
DNS address:
Authentication: PAP

what you refer to as two separate things are actually one and the same... I just have one profile for data connection 'Vodafone_Live'.the browser also uses the same data connection and the gmail app also uses the same data connection... I'm surprised on how you arrived at the conclusion in your post.you are just fragmenting the settings into two divisions. those two go under the same profile. (ps: for a few phones you have two internet settings .... one for the phone apps like builtin browser and another one for java apps... you just need to select which profile you need to use under each settings.. but the profile is the same in this case 'Vodafone_live' which has all the values stated in the above post.)

Agreed that the name of both the settings is "Vodafone live" (VL). But note that the java app (gmail) that uses the data connection does not use a proxy while internet browsing requires a proxy. So the "IP address" field in my previous post for the proxy is blank in B whereas has some numbers in A. That is why B is referred to as a direct connection. It also has an "APN". My Sony Ericsson W610i has TWO separate settings for web browsing (internet) and the data connection(data) respectively, under the same name(VL). More details and confirmation can be had from
I'm getting this error: 'This program requires a data connection. Please contact your carrier, or visit the Gmail Mobile FAQ on your computer for more info.'

Some of the details may be phone/model specific, as i have already mentioned. Maybe your phone lists all details together, whereas my phone separates internet and data parts of the VL profile into two groups.

I am not a networking specialist but as an amateur, i get this impression that the two groups may belong to two different layers of the network stack. Anyone like to comment on this?

And now this:To use gprs, Vodafone prepaid subscribers are required to maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 50/- , failing which the connection is disabled at the server. When I recharged, it would not automatically get activated. I have had to call their helpline to "refresh" my account. I told them that this had to be taken care of. This time, (after topping up my account), instead of calling them, I just SMSed VL to the number mentioned earlier in this thread but discarded the settings msgs that i received afterwards. Rebooted the mobile and GPRS was active again. I dont know whether all this was really necessary or it would have been reactivated anyway!!

Well i just discovered. Recharge/top-up the account to a credit balance greater than 50/-. Power down and power-up phone and GPRS is active again.

How is the EDGE service from Vodafone? Is there any signficant upgrade in the speed from GPRS?? And anyone using the Hutch TV service?

Hi,today , i Sent ACT VL to 144 (prepaid connection). my account balance was only 20 rs. but gprs was activated immediately .

i have EDGE enabled phone but its not so great speedsjust 25% max speeds over GPRS
