This is as predictive as one can get really!!
I have taken pirated XP, just coz Windows has the advantage of it being "Old" in this business. So, most game developers are developing Windows-based games - i think Microsoft must have bribed them.
ANd still, i am seriously thinking on throwing away XP too, for any Linux based OS, coz i dont see myself playing many games in the near future, with the career slowly nearing a take-off.
Take the case of Android - fully open source, fully free.......what has it done?? Compelled the other OS like Symbian & Windows for Mobile, to go lenient & allow developers with codes to develop apps for their platform.
And what does using Android make u feel - cheated till today by Symbian & other paid OS.....

If there is a will, even Microsoft can give their crap for free.....mainly by reducing their expenditure on curbing piracy.
Look at how many things they do to curb piracy:
1) Whatever from Microsoft u install, whether free or paid - it asks for validation of ur Windows - be it IE 8/9, or WMP.....
And what has that brought to them?? Hardly a few takers for WMP & IE, as compared to other Media players like VLC & browsers like Chrome......
So they are already losing out on their Market share in free stuff.
2) They have set up Call-centers just to activate ur product via phone......hahaha!! What the hell??
They set up:
a) Call-centres: A major capital expenditure if owned, or a major revenue expenditure if rented/outsourced......
b) Dedicated telephone lines: They surely dont come for free. Especially if its a toll-free number.
c) A system, that checks the long 48 & 54 digit codes, whether it is genuine or not......
I dont think these things come for free.
Instead of spending so much, if only they gave stuff for low prices/free.....
