YouTube Updates

I am actually quite interested to find out if EU can regulate this behavior. I completely understand why Google is doing what they are doing. Their ad revenue on external sites probably has taken a massive hit in recent years. So it's logical that they are going to focus on retaining the revenue from their own sites which they can control. YouTube is probably one of the most expensive platform to run on the web. And there is very little chance it would ever get a competitor for long form videos just because it is so hard to run profitably.

I do love all the posts on reddit from people who are like I would die before I pay for premium or watch any ads. And then cheer EU for having the policies that could potentially regulate this behavior. What they do not understand is that YouTube has zero incentive to let you watch the videos if they cannot monetize that behavior. It costs them money. And any other company that tries to provide an alternative would be forced to do the same. You either donate or pay or deal with ads. Free ride on the web was over more than a decade ago. Only actual free products are things that people are funding themselves or are offering it as part of their hobby. Which is what I am essentially doing running this website.

I may be criticized for saying this, but the tech giants are responsible for setting this expectation that things are free on the internet. Sure, they wanted to foster an addicted audience and increase traffic for a good period of time, but how did it affect the users? People feel they are entitled to free content and free access to information.

Everyday I come across so many comments on Instagram that courses and training programs should be free. Why? Because they have been getting everything for free all this while. I worked for a company that offered Live Virtual Classroom software (zoom competitor) and that is when I learned that infrastructure, data and storage cost money. A lot of money in some cases. Someone or the other is paying for what we perceive as 'free'.

Reddit people are kids or crazy. They hate anyone making profits/have a viable business but also complain about not getting paid enough at their jobs.

It takes a lot of money to produce those videos and storing so much data, always available at any location. It seriously costs too much money.

Any site owner should have the right to decide if they want freeloaders or not.
