Broadband Surprises with Airtel (Free upgrades for everyone)

Hopefully government would either sell BSNL or turn it into an infra company assigned the job of laying down fiber throughout the country and renting it to private players.

BSNL needs a revival plan. Sure its a hard thing & present Govt has no idea how to do it.

But selling BSNL will destabilize the Telecom market. Private companies work purely on maximizing profits. If it weren't for BSNL, many rural areas will get no connectivity.

Besides, its good to have competition in Telecom market. I think BSNL is closely tied at top spot with Airtel as biggest Broadband service provider.

If BSNL falls, entire Broadband market will be in monopoly control of Reliance (RJio & RCom) and Airtel.

This is getting very confusing! Can someone please explain me this?

I'm currently on the 175GB plan with 8mbps (Chennai) - and got a topup of 5GB; whereas someone here got like 50GB for the same plan? I can't even see where my plan name is now - the bill is like more than 3.2k after taxes and I feel like its unfair. I talked to CS and they're giving me 20GB extra (not as topup) but its surprisingly added after an FUP reset.

Still, should I push for 16mbps instead? Or is there a better value for money plan?

Let me clear it for you. First of all you are on a package that is no longer available. Till last month, I was also on the same package. Then Airtel introduced Rapid plans and I shifted to Rapid 2499 (16mbps till 200gb and then 512kbps). For Chennai there is one Rapid 2399 available I guess.

So, from 175gb I shifted to 200gb, however speed remained 8mbps coz 16mbps isn't available in my area.

Now yesterday, I came to know about broadband surprises and being always a high bandwidth user and an old user, I received 50gb topup. So as a result, now I have 250gb in total.

I do not think it is unfair as most of the people who have been offered 50gb have been high bandwidth users and old users (more dan 6-7 years).

@India_King Called them to upgrade my speed to the max available in my area i.e. 8MBPS at the existing price. They told me that we should first get the message in either Broadband Surprises or in mail to get the upgrade.

Btw they were offering me 8MBPS at Rs.1399 Truly Unlimited. Did not take it and they advised me to wait for a few days and if this plans come they will automatically upgrade it.

Thanks a lot for the explanation!

By unfair, I only meant the pricing as a whole along with speed in accordance to these new plans - especially since there's no reference to the kind of plan you have (which I'd absolutely love to have!) on the Airtel site for Chennai and none of the plans listed come even close.

Edit : Are you in Delhi, perhaps?

Does 1399 include cost of IP?

Were they were offering you 16 Mbps Rapid 1399 plan ( But you'll get top speed 8 Mbps)? Then you have to pay cost of IP on top of it.

My knowledge (from a friend at Airtel) is that 999 8 Mbps 7 GB is a retention plan. Paying 450/- for IP will be 1449/- per month. You may get 12 month discount on top of it.

BTW, new retention plans may be coming as Airtel has revised its Tariffs.

I am not in a rush to pay more to get additional speed. I suspect, Airtel is about to raise Bandwidth in near future. If they don't do it, then i will get higher speed retention plan.
