now can you tell what the download and upload speeds are and what plan are you on?

I didn't select any special data packs as I plan to use this just as a backup for BB. So I am on default plan 1p/10kb.

Speedtest.net results gave 0.38Mb/s which is the maximum possible speed with N73. I am sure the speeds will go beyond 1.5Mbps with HSDPA handsets.

major telecom players should simply have collaborated together and boycotted the 3G auctions. should have forced the government to look into the future. but sadly. that would have disappointed millions of people in india who already own a 3G smartphone. HTC has just one model recently launched EVO that is 4G capable.

Perhaps. But 4G should be backwards compatible, so if they *launched* the 4G network it should work with 3G phones - just at 3G speeds, and those with 4G phones could enjoy 4G.

And they'd have saved themselves $15 billion or so.

i can see one good thing about 3G auctions.

airtel, vodafone and reliance have won rights for both delhi and mumbai.

they now have a great reason to get the government to bring in mobile number portability at least in the metro cities.

all of these three companies would want to get as many new customers as possible from rival networks who would not be able to launch 3G services in delhi and mumbai.

i am using aircel currently. they do not get haryana. so i would have to switch to a rival service provider. airtel sadly has not picked up haryana. not sure if they would be able to serve 3G in gurgaon from delhi.

things are going to get whole lot complicated now 3G is limited to three private players in any particular reason.

BSNL and MTNL? idiots could not do anything with the kind of time advantage government gave them. now they are crying on the fees they would have to pay for the licenses.

i am not sure if they can operate a 4G network and still serve 3G customers through it. from what i see 3G customers are shifted to the EDGE networks in areas where 3G coverage is spotty... i assume that the two networks are different? not sure though.

other operators which didn't win will license spectrum from the ones that did win.

aircel will license 3G in your area from someone that one,it depends what their userbase is and will the 3G licensing benefit them

4g would be able to serve 3G cells,it depends on the government to allow the spectrum to be used on the 3G frequency,if 3G was skipped then this would have to be allowed by the government.

so you believe airtel/vodafone/reliance would rent their spectrum to other players for cheap in delhi and mumbai? i do not see them do so. the prices are already going to be sky high for local services.

the operators would have saved money but now the government gets to get more more money when 4G spectrum auctions happen in a few years time.

our government wants money so they will try to get as much as they can by each level of technology

Hehe - just days after the end of the 3G spectrum auction... http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/telecom/TRAI-recommendations-on-4G-services-by-year-end-/articleshow/5956547.cms&urlhash=i80b&trk=news_discuss

Could we see "4G" in the next couple of years? Maybe. In my opinion, they could have just skipped the 3G auction (as 3G is obselete) and gone straight to 4G.

If I were Bharti, Vodafone etc, I would be livid.

govenment would have been livid if they didn't get the 3G money

i guess mobile operators would not push for 4G for a couple of years now. i think europe auctioned 3G spectrum back in 2000. it took 10 years for india to catch up. there is no incentive for any player to buy 4G spectrum for at least half a decade.
