I share airtel connection among PCs by connecting a switch to beetle 200bx modem. The problem starts when one of the firends starts downloads at very hi speeds my bandwidth is choked. The menu that we acces through "telnet 192.168.1.1" has an option for Quality of Service. How can I implement it so that at peak times everybody gets equal share of their bandwidth.

quality of service isnt to provide equal bandwith to all ip's .. it prioritizes speed for specific ports/protocols .. You should disable direct access to modem as gateway and put some proxy server at one of machines which can limit download speed per ip .

Yes, you need a proxy/gateway in between. Cheapest way it to buy a buffalo / Linksys router and install a linux based firmware. Cost 24 - 4k.

You can distribute bandwidth based in IP as well. In that case it does not matter which port is being used.

If others can download at faster speeds, why change settings in your Beetel modem.?
Try SpeedGuide.net :: Your Guide to Broadband
Check your computer's dl and ul
download the TCP/Ip Optimiser program from same web site.
Install in your computer and select optimize.
( Also the tcp/Ip analyser)
recheck speed.
