Hello,
Just got myself registered with this awesome website after getting impressed by reading the topics posted here.

Hope my questions will be answered too, wisely.

I've been hearing all about this thing called "port forwarding", and I kind of figured out from www.portforwarding.com, what it is.

I am on Airtel Unlimited 999and obviously download a lot from torrents and from the web too, my download speeds range from 28-33kbps. I have a Touchtel DSL ADSL Modem manufactured by RealTime (Airtel gave me this modem almost 2 years back). My question is will this "port forwarding" stuff increase my download speed dramatically?

If it does then can someone please take the pain for spoon feeding me with the answers? A step by step guide will be really appreciated.

Hmmm. Ok but it would be nice if you could tell me how this "portforwarding" thing works? And also is my Touchtel ADSL DSL modem ok?

1. 32KB/s = 256Kbps, there isn't going to be any more "dramatic increase in speeds"2. Port forwarding mens being connectable, i.e a remote peer can establish a connection with you , that increases the overall peers that can connect to you and vice versa, it hence leads to more consistent/higher speeds.3. Which torrenting client do you use, does the connection icons(in most) turn green? If so then there isn't any need to forward, they already are.

it is more or less same for every modem i guess.

Setting up Port Forwarding

1-> Configure your torrent client to listen to a particular port. In utorrent u can enter this value in Options menu-> preferences->network-> port used for incoming connnection. Any value between 50000-60000 is recommended.

2->- From DOS prompt, type ipconfig. Note the IP address that you get.

3-> Now, go to 192.168.1.1/main.html

4-> Click on Advanced Setup
Then browse for the NAT option. You reach NAT --> Virtual Servers Setup.

5-> This is where we setup port forwarding. Click on "Add"
- In this window, select "Custom Server" & enter the name of the app for which you are setting port forwarding(in this case utorrent).

6-> In "Server IP Address:" Enter the IP address you noted earlier
- Below, enter the port no. you selected in step 1(fill it in "External Port Start" & "External Port End")

7-> In protocol select TCP/UDP (we require both).

8-> Click Save/Apply and the modem will reboot.

9-> To check whether the port has been forwarded properly or not go this site

Thanks guys for the reply, I use BitComet and have no issues with it till date, all my torrents start picking up speeds of 30kbps.

192.168.1.1/main.html this does not work for me. When I enter this in my browser (both IE and Firefox) it says page not found.

After reading through these forums and portforwading.com, I've managed to set up a static ip - Did I do the right thing by setting up a static ip?

1. Your connection seems OK.
2. What is the modem you are using.? or additional router ?
Default Router Passwords - The internets most comprehensive router password database

3. How did you change to static IP and PF without (2) above ?
4. "Static IP" is not real .
Check often and see if it remains same.

Thanks for the reply.

I had mentioned earlier, that I've a ADSL DSL Modem which I got from Airtel 2 years back (it has"touchtel" written on it).

I got my static ip from this link PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

And also this 192.168.1.1/main.html does not work for me. I guess if I get this to work then I can follow the steps warrenhastings posted here.

And please do answer the basic question will port forwarding give me higher speeds while downloading torrents?

Your question has been answered already.
