Dear All,

I am located in South Delhi, Lajpat Nagar and I recently got upgraded to Airtel Xstream Fiber 300Mbps plan with unlimited download top up.

Since day 1 I have been getting speed issues where during the day speed fluctuates between 60 - 170 Mbps on WiFi and I have seen 300 Mbps only twice and that too at like 6AM in the morning. Yes I am using the 5GHz WiFi option and this connection is through Airtel directly and NO local cable operator involved.

When I spoke to the guy who did the installation he claimed that this is how Airtel Fiber is and even if I pay for 1Gbps this is the best I would get which is total nonsense.

Anyways I have spoken to customer care and they raised a ticket and closed it on their own without doing anything.

Now after discussion with the area manager he is willing to change my router to the Nokia device (earlier it was Huawei) to check if it’s the router has problems.

Can you guys please advise/suggest what should I be doing to sort out these speed issues. I have been checking speed on all sorts of latest devices at home including iPad Pro, iPhone pro MacBook etc. all of them show maximum 170 Mbps however upload is always above 300Mbps.

Really sick and tired of this pathetic service and I’m on the verge of disconnecting it, would really appreciate some help. Thanks

Dual Band WiFi speed — Simultaneous 2.4GHz 300 Mbps and 5GHz 867 Mbps connections for 1200 Mbps of total available bandwidth; supports 802.11ac standard.

i guess 300mbps should work fine on 5ghz in close proximity. but probably would not do well at 2.4ghz.

@mohit11 Your problem is only with WiFi and nothing other than solving WiFi issues is going to give you peace of mind.

1. Check if your 5 GHz band is operating on 80 MHz of bandwidth. I believe it is, as you are saying that you got a link speed of 580 Mbps

2. Change bands as you might be experiencing interference although chances are low with 5 GHz, still you might have a neighbour running his 5 GHz router near a window and your router is also close the same window.

3. Disable all QoS settings on the router.

4. Invest un a good 802.11ax router. ax standard gives 5 GHz speeds on 2.4 GHz band. You will not regret buying one.

5. My 2016 Mi Router Mini gave 50+ MB/s intranet transfer speeds between two MacBooks. So, the 5 GHz is definitely capable if properly optimised. Test if you are getting above 40+ MB/s intranet speeds between your devices. Test with SSDs and phones with latest UFS storage. It might happen that memory doesn't support high r/w speeds. If your router passes the local transfer test, your router is very much capable.

6. Incase it can't, blame it on the ethernet cable that you connect the ONT to the router. I am assuming you will be testing speeds on a different router in bridge mode. I read your posts saying the Nokia, Huawei ones have disappointed you. Don't expect the stock ones to deliver full speeds even under optimal conditions.

I had the same issues with Airtel Xstream. Been struggling with speed and loss of signal. They have installed the Nokia modem. I purchased a TP Link Archer A6 which has 5 antennas. If I’m standing in front of the Nokia router, I get 200 mbps over WiFi on the 5G network. When I connect the Archer 6 with an Ethernet, again, if I’m standing in front of it, I get about 130mbps. But when I step 10 feet away from either, the speed drops to 100mbps and 20 feet, it drops to 4mbps!! Is there an issue with the Nokia modem connecting to a TP-Link router? Should I ask them to install the huwei one instead? Please help! Am fed up of it:-(
