any point of buying a wifi 6 router if the ont/onu is limited by 200mbps

current setup(provided by LCO):
my plan: Bharat Fiber (FTTH) 100mbps
ONU model: AN5006-04-A (only supports 100mbps)
Router: Tenda Wireless N300


planning to upgrade my connection to 200mbps.
I've asked my LCO to upgrade my ONU to support 200mbps plan.


Question: Taking into consideration the broadband plan limit and ONU limit, Is there a benefit of using a wifi 6 router with this setup?

I plan to buy Archer AX53

I am using Airtel Broadband plan with 200mbps speed, Airtel has provided Nokia Router and for my first floor I am using Tenda AC10 as WiFI extender (5G) and getting a descent 190+ Mbps speed. I don’t see any reason for any change in any device as of now.

@armaan_99 you have an AC router (wifi5) mine is wifi4. Also, my download and upload speed do not even reach 100mbps(current plan is 100mbps).



Sourcethe highest download speed that I've recorded in past is 7-8 MB/s.
To upgrade my plan to 200mbps my LCO asked for Rs. 3500 to upgrade to an ONT(inbuilt router) which was only 300mbps. so I thought might as well invest some more and get a wifi6 router. I asked for ONU instead of ONT(assuming LCO will upgrade to an ONU for free).

my LCO refers to ONT TYPE-A(without wifi) as ONU.

you can get over 200 with AC Wifi, i use EAP245 and there is one wall in between, My plan speed is 300Mbps (though VPN reduces that a bit)

2.4Ghz is quite congested now in urban areas, likely the reason for low speed (also its just slow)

AX will be useful for internet over 300Mbps, but having much higher lan speeds is still useful if u have a server or smthn.

I have seen AC1200 good enough up to 300Mbps per client. If you have a wave2 device that gives wifi speeds up to 866 Mbps, then it's good for up to 400Mbps.
If you are buying a new device, AX is not a bad buy for future-proofing but it is useless if you don't have AX Client devices.

Ask your LCO for an non-Wifi ONU which has a Gigabit Port and use any Wifi-5 AC router as access point / bridge mode (Archer A6 ,Tenda AC10 , D-Link 825 ,Asus/Netgear (If money is not an issue)).
I bet u only wud have 1/2 devices which supports Wifi6 + Most of Wifi6 router doesn't support the latest Wifi 6E. Wifi 6E router are retailing at 8k+ minimum.

The main reason for upgrading my setup is, that recently I've been facing some internet connection problems.

1. page load fails(I had to reload the page multiple times)
2. Internet goes away for 2-3 minutes and then comes back again. (this happens quite a few times during the day). The message displayed is Dial-up successfull, but can not surf the Internet. Please contact you ISP.

Not sure what the cause is but I am hoping it will get fixed once I install the new router.

The above seems to be ISP backend-related issues and not your router itself. @inceptioncandy

@Lolita_Magnum contacted the ISP and they asked me for the traceroute of the sites I visit (mostly the connection break during my meetings on google meet so I give the traceroute of meet.google.com) and they confirmed that everything is Ok on their side. LCO told me that the router is very old and got hot so this might be the reason.
