Same thoughts here. I prefer Avast! home edition (running v4.8 now). This suit gives more than needed protection. I am using it from last 1 year. & yeah, its absolutely free!
Other good options in free AVs: AVG & Avira. But I am more satisfied with Avast. Even it is a top rated AV on CNET & softpedia.

You guys can download it from http://www.avast.com & ya if you decide to give it a try & feel its default skin & UI is very unprofessional then download some addition cool skins from same website. (because default one really looks unprofessional:frown
