@Ankur_Desai > The officials (Divisional Eng) did tell me that there is a tower near my place. He also informed me that they have a fixed bandwidth for any particular area and when users increase, that bandwidth gets distributed amongst the users in that area.
I did try using it at different places in Pune and even in Two BSNL officies. (crap!.. I did not get speed over there too)

@Rsen > I opened the lid to see inside, and I found garbage..:D
Actually, I did consult couple of people having 3g modems before buying it for myself. They said they are getting download speeds of over 1.2 Mbps. I fell for it just thinking about it and buzzed of to get one for myself. (I should have seen a demo before buying.)
Checking out couple of foreign websites, I also found out that the service provider there INFORM THE CUSTOMER`S about the towers and connectivity they will get even before they buy their service. KOOOOL ha!... Yeah on the Indian side, we need to shout on top of our voices in order for our exhausted Customer Care department to blubber few words of technical wisdom.
I do agree with your last point regarding money making. Our population with less literacy is the reason that big companies take the public for granted until someone knocks the Consumer Court.

@Vaithy > what speed did your boy receive that he wanted to close your broadband?. I am eager to know. Reading your post I am feeling the same way when I came to know about 1.2 Mb download speeds on 3g.

@Rsen > I agree to your point.

I switch my south-zone APN to North-Zone APN and it improves speed sometimes. This is mostly trial and error.

I did not know to switch zones, or I guess I just did not look into it deeper.

http://D:%5CpingThis is the speed I am getting while I was typing this message.

Give your local DE hell, and tell him to fix the problem, or extend your data validity. On the Teracom data card, I'm getting faster speeds (2.7 to 3.1Mbps) than my adsl (1.7 to 2Mbps) in congested, bandwidth-shared Mumbai.

People in India are actually quite smart; at least in comparison to their counterparts in 'developed' countries. (If you've lived abroad, you'll know).

No, this is a very very common misconception. The average indian is illiterate and barely educated if at all. You can't compare the average Joe in the USA/UK with graduates in India : which is what everyone seems to do.

We understand the cost-value proposition far better.

It's a poor country, hence people are miser/thrifty/stingy. Who would have guessed ?

No 'developed' country has the economic, social and geographic diversity of India.

irrelevant
Therefore, no single connectivity solution would be optimal in India.

Never said it was; it still doesn't change the fact that wireless internet is crap.
While fibre optic and cable may be possible in urban land masses (cables are already laid), cost and maintenance would be impractical in India's hinterland.

Fibre optic internet is the most expensive form of internet available. It's not even available in all regions of, say, NYC or London. So yeah, it's not coming to India anytime soon.
Cable internet is an entirely different matter.
Infrastructure costs aren't that high - almost every home on India with capacity to afford internet has cable TV.
Cable internet is an extremely cost-effective and reliable wired alternative.
The only reason that cable doesn't take off properly is possibly because the cable lines are controlled by local mafias (lolz) who offer craptastic service. But obviously our government won't do anything to fix this.
That is where wifi, wimax and 3G / 4G become so much more cost-effective and fast to implement.

Nope. It's more expensive than DSL/ADSL for obvious reasons; and more expensive than cable.
Mobile internet like 3G is also a great boon to people who travel, and require constant connectivity.

Of course. However the need to get a permanent Wifi connection at home is what completely befuddles me.

Wifi *IS* being marketed as a "cheap" and better alternative to wired internet all over india, especially in big cities. Wireless internet only supplements wired internet; and has the extremely situational use of access on the move.

There is absolutely zero interest to improve twisted pair dsl/adsl lines and even less interest to implement cable internet.

Wireless internet has fluctuating speeds, horrendous packet loss issues and signal issues. It's great for casual stuff like checking emails occasionally obviously; but total garbage for anything that requires a decent internet connection.

It completely escapes me why people buy 3G in droves for exclusively home usage for higher prices when plans like BSNL home 500 or other unlimited plans that are also quite cheap are so readily available with DSL.

Please try to face facts; it's a common delusion to think India has the most intelligent people in the entire world and everything our government does is glorious.
