Its been a week or so, since I've got bsnl's fiber to home service installed at my place, and I must say, I am impressed. It all started about 10 days ago, a BSNL guy had come to our complex, to advertise about the launch of ftth services in our society. I was kind of skeptical, but out of curiosity I opted for a connection. They offer phone, internet and
tv on their line, I opted for the phone and internet, plan 825 to be exact. It currently offers unlimited data at 512kbps download, upload speeds are unrestricted and vary dependin g on the traffic. Currently, I get upload speeds of upto 3-5 mbps, helps a lot in seeding torrents
Now back to the installation. I paid a total of 4500 for installation and the first month's bill in advance ( 1500 is for installation + 825 for the plan + some security deposit + 100 for the landline + taxes ) Within three days, the equipment was installed at my apartment. Then in another three days, the fiber got cut, due to ongoing construction in my society, I called up the installation guys, and it was sorted out within a day, I didn't expect such prompt service from BSNL. Anyway, with all issues sorted out, my ftth connection seems very nice to me. I also have BSNL and Airtel DSL, am thinking of disconnecting my airtel line. All in all I would say, ftth is nice, but at 512k, you can't expect anything different from DSL, apart from the great upload speeds and excellent customer service. Customer service for ftth is not provided by the 1500 number, but by some reliance number, and the people on the other end know what you are talking about. There are higher speed plans available, but most of them would be out of the reach of most people. The 825 plan was not on the BSNL website, last time I checked. Here are some screenshots, and a picture of the setup :
