Cheap Modems ruining Airtel Broadband Experience

Picked it up on a visit to the U.S.. Generally customs have become more relaxed nowadays (in Bombay at least) and will look the other way if there is nothing extremely suspcious in your baggage (if you are coming in from the U.S.). You are allowed approx $200 in duty free goods or something so this falls within it. I just go through the green channel without any h@$$les most of the time. When they pull me up, I just tell them that everything put together amounts to an amount less than the allowable limit and they wave me through.

Frankly, I don't understand why the babus just don't allow free import of these products, like in the U.S.. We don't manufacture them anyway, thanks again to the babus not providing adequate infrastructure. Else it is my feeling that we would give China a run for their money or even blow them away since we would have both hardware and software expertise.Import of such products will only help with intenet penetration and that can only be good for the country.

Hawking technology makes such a router. Don't know if it actually gives you twice the surfing throughput. They have other similar products on their website.

My take on this is a little different. Rather than free imports, I would prefer if we started making these devices ourselves. If we are aiming at millions of people having broadband in India, I would rather have companies taking up production of cable modems and such.Call me idealistic/socialistic etc. etc., but I would rather have an Indian earning the same wage at a production line of a domestic entrepreneurship, than to be working at a call center serving foreign companies.And the second side of the coin is that it's not just babus sitting idly in their chair, but also private sector executives lacking a vision of where they would like to take India. For example, a company like Airtel could draw out a 10 year plan whereby they would deliver a 512kbps (or whatever is relevant to that date) connection to a large segment of India, including rural India, and forego profits for the first year or two, in order to pave the way for larger profits accompanied by healthy infrastructure. But I believe that they are more concerned with profits on a year-to-year basis. The point is that neither side (govt. or pvt.) is helping even nearly as much as it can.But perhaps this discussion is best left for another thread.

multilink is a company in gurgaon which gave a hard time to ultra expensive US Robotics modems. i think they would have routers as well...

Sorry , but was looking for a quick reply and didn't expect many people to know about it, so I wanted maximum visibility. Won't do it in future. I am travelling to India next week so need to order soon if I need to get one in time. Zoom markets some nice ones out here and they are reasonably priced.

Even when I press reply, it automatically quotes it. I know I could remove it if I wanted, but I felt I was replying so wanted to quote it. Never mind. I did some 'google-work' and found that the USB modem is the Tera-100u. And after numerous page translations on Google I found that it is probably Annex A. Atleast thats what it seemed from the translations. This should make the Zoom modem/router 5565 a good candidate as it also gives a VOIP port which can either be used with a free service or by signing up with a provider like Broadvoice. If you don't mind I will be posting the same info in my VOIP thread as I think it will be useful to people searching for VOIP. It'd be nice if you could post the model of the Yozan router/modem.
