Only D-Link USB dongle you can use, you can't use any other dongle. It won't work, don't waste your time.

By stable I mean, the stuff has to be able to run at 45 C, 24x7, transferring data almost without pause without fail Sure, if you don't mind the odd disconnection or similar issues, the stock fw shouldn't be an issue. D-Link hardware is better than TP-Link, but tp-link's firmwares are better. Really your call, also, you could check whether dd wrt supports mass storage on 2750U or any similar tp-link model.
