how can one have his name in the voter list without having a voter id assigned ?

I had registered as voter, so I had got voter id number and my name is also present in voting list. But when my family had gone for getting voter card, I was not in India, so I couldnt get register for voter card.

I am already voting in several elections for last decade without voter card. My name is in voting list, so I can vote. I generally carry my PAN card as ID proof and it is accepted, though last time officer present at booth told me to get voter card next time. Though he himself was not serious in his comment

Registering as a voter and for voter card is a single process, you don't apply for being a voter and getting a voter card separately.

Your name in the voter list is itself a proof you have a voter card though having a voter card doesn't mean your name will be in the list too

As it has happened long time back (around 10-12 years ago), so I dont exactly remember how I got registered as voter. I guess some Election commission officials visited our house and took details about all members above age of 18. Later we had to visit some govt office where we needed to submit address proof and there they also took photo which got printed on Voter card. But when my family members went to register for voter card, I was away.
But bottomline is my name is listed as valid voter in my ward. All I have to do is submit application again to get voter card. I had started this process last year before Assembly election but couldnt complete as there was huge crowd, and I did not had patience and time to wait in line to submit my application. I will try again after some time (may be in 2017 when we have Muncipal corporation elections in my state).

you can register for voter id online. for example if you are from maharashtra, choose Form 6 for new registration. make sure you delete your existing old voter-id from electoral rolls afterwards.

An Election commission official visited, had come to collect voter Id and aadhar details as part of drive to link them.

so if i don't give my aadhar number they will cancel my id ?

i don't want to link my aadhar as they post all voters details in public, someone could use that and get a copy of my e-aadhar or worse

You can always say you dont have Aadhar card (even if you have!)

They can not cancel your voter card. Its your constitutional right. And can not be denied.
