cache. guests are served content from cache that is updated after a specific gap. lessens the load on the server. xenforo recommends 5 minute but that's quite pointless for a low traffic site like this one so i have it set at a higher level. have now reduced it to 10 minutes from 30 minutes...

^ hmmm right that must be it.
need to pay 20 dollars to get updates. not sure if it is worth it to be honest considering it is a pain in the ass to manage and has a lot of issues with structural data.
i would try to add a darker colored variant of the default theme which should basically provide a similar experience with little overhead. just that finding color combinations is sort of annoying which takes time. would probably try to use some website to get a color group chart.
