So, XenForo has finally launched an official solution for Similar Threads which would arrive with 2.2 update in the coming weeks/months. The thing is that it would require a paid upgrade called XFES. This addon costs USD 55 (in addition to USD 55 that I must pay for renewing my license). XFES until now was designed to improve the performance and quality of the integrated search engine. With 2.2 update, it would also be used to power similar threads functionality.
Now, Threadloom Search is providing a good alternative to current basic search that we have here. But to have an integrated solution is always better in the long run.
So, I was wondering if folks here would be interested in contributing a smallish amount which basically would make it an easy decision. Forum gets around 230 active users daily. I imagine around 50 of them are regulars who are used to (are comfortable with) my style of forum moderation. If these 50 users contribute 100 bucks each, I can easily get this addon. If somehow, we can raise more, it can contribute to the cost of license renewal as well. These funds are completely aimed for spending on forum.
Enhance Search has additional costs. I would need to get a second droplet to run it which would basically double the hosting costs of this forum but that is for later. That is manageable.
I should clarify this. I would be renewing XenForo license to get access to 2.2 whenever it is released in any case. I am just not tempted to spend an additional USD 55 for the improved search along with similar threads feature. Though I would love to have it.
Ad and affiliate revenue from the forum are laughable and I have been mostly running this website as a hobby for the last couple of years, so I try to keep the running costs of this forum as low as possible. I still plan to keep this online for as long as logistically possible at my end. And I do have a crude backup plan to transfer operations to someone else in case well you can guess what.

So, here is the idea. I would disable ads on the accounts of people who contribute more than 100 bucks. For life. I understand that this is something you can already do using an ad blocker or dns based blocker, so it is not really something particularly useful. But this is one thing, that I can do instantly. Ads are already blocked on around 40 or so accounts who have more than 1000 posts on the forum so they do not really gain anything with this change.
Apart from that, XenForo does not really provide many options that I can think of... It does not even allow different attachment size limits for different users which is sort of annoying. Most of the functionality is already enabled for users with more than 50 posts. I can take feedback and see what can be done. But I cannot really promise that I can deliver on those requests.
And of course, if any of the contributors think that their money was wasted (in case of any future disagreement or anything like that), I would be more than happy to return the money.
And, if more than a few of you guys want to donate in future as well, I can probably look into a proper solution to automate the process... For now, I would rather do it through UPI transfers to keep it simple.
Not posting it in an independent thread for now.
