Sify
Hi,I have been stuck with sify for years, and finally plan to make a switch as TATA has become available in my area. But I have heard some negative things about the TATA/VSNL connection as well, so what all should I find out before making the plunge? The provider only said that they have a fiber optic connection, and nothing more, and as this is a university area, there aren't too many people who have taken the connection. Also, I haven't decided between the 128UL and the 2mbs NU connection. A few questions about the NU plan1. Is it still available?2. How is the time logged in during the day computed? Do we need to connect using pppoe? If one logs in for 15 minutes at a time during daylight, would one be charged for the whole hour?3. Is their system reliable? Could one be charged for the entire night due to some mistake?4. Effectively how many day hours/month does one get with the plan?Basically, I am quite eager to quit the sify wagon, but am not sure if I would be jumping from pan to fire, as the saying goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I have used a Tata (Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Limited) ADSL connection and had a 256K night time unlimited plan. But I found out that the frauds had a server time one hour ahead of my time. So if I started downloading at 8pm, they would charge me for the download from 8pm to 9pm (their server time). I then switched over to the unlimited plan. Why not have server time based on the time on Pluto?Further, the speeds during the day will be between 20-50% of the plan speed. You might get 80% (max ) of the plan speed during night times and weekends. But there is no guarantee. And they will have downtime of 3-4 days every fortnight (I have suffered it, don't know about the others). If you ask them about slow speeds, they will tell you to defragment your hdd. If you tell them that you are not an idiot and know that bb speeds have nothing to do with the hdd, they they will take down a complaint.I have been trying to get the connection disconnected and they say it will take 45 days to do it. It seems that they are worried people won't pay the bill if they disconnect to soon. You should add the cost of 50 phone calls and two sheets of antacids to your plan cost to get the true picture. But considering the experience people have with Sify, Tata might seem like an angel. Wait for some more comments and if you have positive ones, then go for it. May the gods shower their benevolence on you.

Hi,

I have been stuck with sify for years, and finally plan to make a switch as TATA has become available in my area.

A few questions about the NU plan

1. Is it still available?
2. How is the time logged in during the day computed? Do we need to connect using pppoe? If one logs in for 15 minutes at a time during daylight, would one be charged for the whole hour?
3. Is their system reliable? Could one be charged for the entire night due to some mistake?
4. Effectively how many day hours/month does one get with the plan?

Basically, I am quite eager to quit the sify wagon, but am not sure if I would be jumping from pan to fire, as the saying goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Answers.
1. The plan is on hold.
2. If you are logged for 5 minutes you will be charged for just 5 minutes and not 1 hour. The calculation is based on Rs.9 for 1 hour.
3. You may be charged during the initial few days of usage. But later on it works fine and you can get the deducted amount back.
4. You get total of 360 hours for 6 months in QP360 plan. But for each month activation of Night unlimited reduces your day hours bt apprx. 10.5 hours(equivalent of Rs.99).

I read many negative issues for TATA teleservices maharashtra ( TTML ) but tata indicom broadband has many happy users in this forum ( including me :) ) . Are both of this same ? Btw i got tata indicom broadband 2 mbps nu plan and i am more than happy with it ;) .

Count me also as a happy TI user(at least for the time being) :)

TI/TTML and TI are different. The Tatas seem to have gone crazy. Why run so many different companies and offer different bb connections but use the same parent branding of Tata Indicom? TTML provides bb through the telephone line. But they have fibre laid till the building (FTTB), I think.Anyway I had heard good things about TTML and bad things about TI. Guess the reverse is true. Or both are bad. But TTML is definitely bad.

the latest update is tht a executive visited me today as i had ordered a connection a fortnite ago. but jus to confirm on the status of NU i spoke to sum1 in the local headoffice on the number given to me , and i was told tht tata is not offering the NU feature on new connections .. so after all it was jus another stunt to atttrat customers.. think i shud opt for BSNL now ..

Well i am pretty satisfied with my tata connection!! the thing is whenever i have a technical problem i contact the local field engg directly...which is a great help and also the local field engg has be very helpful by giving his direct no. He himself told me to contact him directly in case of a problem because the customer service guys take a very long time to inform him...so it helps if u can make friends with the local enggAlso the i was charged once for the NU usage but the amount was credited back in a couple of days and i have been using the NU for 2 and 1/2 months without a problem! Also a few days back a guy from tata gave me brochure which still mentions that the NU is available...and the guy who gave it to me also said that NU is available. And as for the speeds they are always reliable...i was using the 512k unlimited connection before for abt 4 months and the speeds were always steady!! i never had to call them up for a speed related problem till date thats abt 7 months!! And this is first for me cause i was using either Exatt or Pacenet before and they always had bandwidth realted problems...

i dont think tht NU is available now on new connections though they r providing the feature to old users.. i dunno wat TI thinks it will achieve by doing this kind of discrimination ... i think i will hold on for a while. NEW SUBSCRIBERS can u guyz please confirm, whether this NU FEATURE is available or no.. ??thanks

@th3jackal : i also think the NU feature is on hold for a while.. Have u paid the money for the conn... if u have then since they don't refund it :( it's prepaid & u r stuck buddy.. My 6 months unlimited plan is nearing it's end.. & i will decide to go in for 256 Unlimited plan or Quick power 360.. If they offer NU then i would go for it.. Will report back here if i get new updates..Can anyone confirm that renewal plans for cust older than 17th may still get the plans as given.. bec. i would really love to try 1 Month of 2 Mbps speeds instead of committing for long duration.. bec. unlimited suits me better..Regarding the topic being discussed..I can be counted as a happy customer.. since last 6 months.. their has not been any downtime except a few times.. Usually comes back in less than a min..Only once it lasted for abt. 11 Hrs..The speed i got of 64Kbps (ya.. it's discontinued but old ppl can still opt 4 it if they want).. was consistent for me max 7-9 KBps(KiloBytes) except on slow sites..It was perfect for my family to do voice chat even when i was abroad for 3 months..(if nothing else is going on in background)... but i would choose a higher speed now bec. of video bandwidth & being stuck in a slow plan..The only drawback is u can't change the plan in between :madness: so u have to choose wisely & then apply.. or go in for 2 conn if u change ur mind later on..
