Yes! S-Off is htc thing. I have a htc phone n have tampered the hboot.img But the point is you can install custom recovery without unlocking boot loader. bootloader unlocking does wipe the data. That would endup in a just bootloopsoft brick. You can still install custom recovery and fix the bootloop or flash a new rom. Custom recovery doesn't require a boot unlock ...

Again, only on HTC devices. You can't flash imgs using fastboot on Nexus devices unless and untill you unlock bootloader.

I still have a htc desire which a clone of nexus one! And i do have samsung phones that i just simply rooted n installed custom recovery. It didn't require boot unlocking Boot unlocking just allows the poweruser to play with the internal system area flash memory n other image files. It has nothing to do with installing custom recovery. Custom recovery gets installed in the ram area ...

Unlocking the bootloader doesn't cause a boot loop. The nexus 4 requires that its bootloader be unlocked before flashing a custom recovery. As for Samsung, stuff can be flashed via Odin directly..

But the bootloader and software is from HTC so it's very different from nexus one in the case of rooting and flashing

Nothing different, Remember, Google provides a base bootloader as part of the Android operating system, and most device manufacturers optimize this for their specific devices.. Optimise in the sense adding their unique UI and crappy apps ... Unlocking bootloader does create a bootloop in cases when you use custom theming, Boot animation, logo etc as it erases user's data in the internal memory. Try this! Use nova launcher Unlock the bootloader and reboot it without a recovery Obviously, you don't even need an odin to flash recovery

It erases user data but not system partition so no boot loop is caused by unlocking boot loaderEvery companies modify the boot loader and lock it with different types of security, HTC are known to lock their boot loaders with a good amount of security and then they release a tool after a long time to unlock

Seems we 're straying from where we actually started. We were talking about bootload unlock not required to install custom recovery. I still stand in my point. Bootload unlocking is not necessary to install recovery. As it get installed in the ram area. It works similar to Win PE ,Linux Live ... What you said above is known to most of the powerusers. Unlocking bootloader will erase every user cutomization of apps they had installed in the internal memory. As i have already said. Try this if you have any old andriod phone. First unroot, lock the bootloader. Install any launcher app from the mkt. Unlock the bootloader. You 'll get struck in the bootloop. It's fixable obviously ...
