Google Android One

Not sure if someone has already mentioned, but

Free Android updates and app downloads***
When using an Airtel SIM card, you can upgrade to the latest version of Android without using any data for the download. Any apps you download from the Google Play Store don’t count against your data usage either (up to 200MB per month).

Question is .. for how long.....

**Requires the use of an Airtel SIM card. Android updates up to 100MB per month and app downloads up to 200MB per month for 6 months.

Frankly speaking, I would not fall for this scam.

2 years worth of android updates. i mean it is technically possible if google can keep the resource usage of future android builds in control. though i am again not going to put much faith into it.

One thing to point is most people who buy te sub-10k phones are not much bothered about updates. I guess maybe 10-20% would probably be..

well. the whole selling point of these devices is guaranteed software updates. it's not like android devices in the same price range have not existed till now. i mean Redmi 1s has better specs and lower price tag. so what exactly are you paying extra for here? :D

Its true that most sub 10k people don't think about updates. but these people are stuck with older versions of android which delivers sub standard performance due to not getting updates frequently. hence people think whole android lacks smoothness.

google is trying to change that. people dont care but google does since its googles' brand thats taking a beating.

the same people would also buy a samsung phone in the same price range instead of a micromax/karbonn/spice. especially when these devices are only available online. google has got this completely wrong. you do not target the next five billion by launching devices that are priced badly (compared to existing competition) and make them available exclusively online. the idea was to get more people connect to the internet. apparently, you need to be online to get these phones in the first place.

The phones will start selling today on Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon. Offline sales will start around Diwali. Google has also announced mobile experience zones that will go around the country soon.

people are already starting to get pissed off by samsung.

Also these devices will be sold offline and these will be sold in places where people are most likely buying these indian brands like spice, maxx, karbonn, celkon etc (i.e tier 2 towns and villages)
