The point is the software update does nothing major. It's because the better hardware, you find it is more smooth. Even the device manufacturers already announced that they are going to release official kitkat ota for few low end devices too. It proves the point that raw update is a marketing gimmick. Any decent hardware phone can be updated to the latest. You don't need an expensive hardware upgrade
If they keep updating a 4 year old phone, they will be doing it out of their pocket. They are here to fill their pockets, not empty them. First they build aosp for the phone, losts of testing, relicense all the services and drivers for lastest version, get drivers from their HW manufacturer, lots of testing, test failed? Redo everything or do not update. Passed? Put custom skin. Test more. Now this takes a lot of resources and a lot of money. Not sure how many years they can do it once you pay them 30k.

KitKat is optimized for low RAM devices hence it is more likely to make it to lower end devices compared to previous editions of Android.
And Android has been feature complete for a few years now. Gingerbread edition of Android has enough features to beat any competing mobile platform in the market today.
Kitkat is optimized to make the brand reach to the masses. It's a business strategy. It was possible with the previous versions too. Since there was no brand marketing involved it was not done. If any fmcg partnered with google to promote its products. You would have seen andriod complan edition (GB), colgate edition (GB) etc.
Yes GB is feature complete like xp desktop version for windows. Then why people are running behind latest tag that brings minimal improvements? That how google or any business wants the market should be. 95% of the endusers don't upgrade for the needs, but just for the wants.

You being an enduser how come you support the industry? Anyhow, Since andriod being an opensource. It can be build from the scratch even by an individual experienced developer (That's what the cynogen is doing, it's a true open source honestly). You need just the source codeLinux kernal. It's is available for free. All this software version updates can be done for free or atleast for a few cents. It's just the manufacturers & google partnered to loot the enduser by making them believe that they are doing something expectional, that eats lots of millions. It is not like that.
The same case is acceptable with windows, since it's a closed source. But with andriod, google is exploiting the market opportunity. At the end of the day, It's again the enduser has to decide between the need & want.

Relicencing & getting newer pre compiled drivers from chip manufacturers is not free...and complany isn't releasing builds for 6 months continuously, that is not how it works.

Thankfully I am seeing LG G2 development skyrocketing. CM11 ROMS are pretty good. Only problem is random reboot which can be fixed only when CM team identifies it.
