Blacks do look black in AMOLED because the pixels where black is to be displayed are completely turned off instead of displaying black.

Ah, I guess I read wrong somewhere at XDA where someone said amoled's aren't good for battery. Anyways, still AMOLED display's are over saturated aren't they?

Yes, Amoled are more oversaturaed, Better battery life- This is because light will glow only in selected parts where it needs to glow and it will remain off in place where it is black ..LCD poor battery life- the whole screen needs to glow when ever screen is on. But the auto brightness will be better in LCD and it will give perfect picture.
Frankly LCD is better than LED because of life span. perfect amoLED is way too costly for manufacturer.

a good supler AMOLED screen feels like you are holding a colored magazine and reading it :)

And yes. Androids have crappy battery life generally speaking. Anyone who is trying to switch from Apple iPhone to an Android device would be better off going for a device like Note 3 or G2 which comes with larger batteries. An iPhone user would hate the battery life offered by a device like Nexus 5.
There are a lot of factors involved of course... Nexus 5 has a 1080p display. Android devices tends to run more apps in the background. Even homescreens have more functional apps like widgets which are going to consume more resources. And of course, not every device has software optimized for the hardware it comes loaded on. So yes, there are compromises.

As far as life span is concerned, LCDs can have dead pixels over the time, but LEDs can't. LEDs can get stuck pixels though. And nothing can be done for a dead pixel but a stuck pixel can be fixed.
