looks like made a mistake going for a 5400rpm drive. my videos being played from this drive show random pauses even though i am playing the SD edition. i wonder what would happen on HD content. :\ anyone here looking for a good deal on a 3TB 5400rpm drive? :P

Did you check if the WD30EZRX needs alignment?

IF it needs alignment according to the WD Acronis Align tool, it would be better to align a 3TB hdd, holding less amount data as it took 4 hrs to align my WD Green EARS series 2TB drive having about 1.5TB of data on Win7. The time required to align is directly proportional to the amount of data on the drive.

Not sure if Windows 8 aligns AFDs @4K sectors on formatting them, natively.

I don't think rpm speed matters. Try any other player. I have a 1 TB portable 5400 rpm drive which has full hd 3D videos that plays fine without any lag. Btw I 'm using Daum PotPlayer ...

hmm. freaking joke.

their website does not mention anything about windows 8.

in any case i decided to download the utility and run it.

needed me to register an account.

the account registration page is from the 90s. wants my address, TWO PHONE NUMBERS and of course a password with 8 characters including small-caps large-caps and special-characters. even my credit card company is not this fussy.

managed to get past the login screen. the download button does not work at all.

turns out it is a known issue: AcronisAlignTool_s_e_2_0_111.exe NOT OBTAINABLE! H... - Western Digital Community

currently downloading it from an external source. could very well be malware.

**** WD.

i use smplayer for years now. never had any issue with my seagate drives. just for testing sake, i tried it using vlc player latest version and faced similar issues.

i get pretty decent transfer speed on read and write. so that is not an issue definitely. i saw a bunch of more videos. these played much better. with one or two hiccups in the entire 45 minute period.
