I'm going to call up Hathway tomorrow to enquire about the DOCSIS 3.0 plans. The website shows that it's available for only SoBo users? Will update the post as soon as I get more details.
Edit: I called them up today, seems like these plans will only be implemented in the Suburbs from February :(

Sorry for the late posting folks but I have an update. So last week after telling me that I will get the modem on Wednesday, I still don't get it till Thursday morning. I called up the contact guy at Hathway and requested that I pick up the modem from them directly (my office is quite close to their Kamala mills office). I went and picked up the modem and setup was a simple plug and play (it took 10 mins to autoconfigure for the first time). Unfortunately I was travelling from Thursday night and only came back yesterday (hence the delayed post) and am only testing it now. Few details:
1. They are using a Thomson Router (TCM 471).
2. Here is my speedtest rest. Quite pleasing

3. No web authentication required. This is a BIG change. The guy at Hathway told me that Docsis 3.0 customers are considered premium customers, so no webpage authentication is required. This is fantastic!
4. For those interested in pings, there is the one for google.com
Pinging google.com [74.125.236.130] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 74.125.236.130: bytes=32 time=9ms TTL=57
Reply from 74.125.236.130: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=57

Ping statistics for 74.125.236.130:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

If people want other sites checked, I am happy to do that for them. Let me know.

5. The Hathway website now defines South Mumbai for Docsis 3.0 to mean Colaba to Mahim and Sion to Antop Hill. Kickass and Sanke1, you should consider this. No dealing with MTNL babus and once it is set, it stays (your cable operator line is almost never down!).

Is anyone interested in any other information about my Docsis 3.0 connection, feel free to ask.

the speeds are good but the FUP is too less. i use ard 120+ gb a month. There is no plan with 150gb odd FUP ! :(
there is a 15gb limit @ 25mbits for 2249. compare this with mtnl at 150gb fup 10mbits for 2200. mtnl has zero downtime for vdsl.
dealing with the asses from the cablewala's office is another matter.

For me so much speed makes no sense if I get paltry download limits. It's like buying a Ferrari only to be told after that it can run only 100 kms per month or else the speedo would be locked at 30 kmph for remainder of the month.MTNL Mumbai Facebook page has new plans to announce on Tuesday. All eyes on that. Hopefully the plans actually offer better speeds and data and make sense to upgrade to. But I won't be surprised if they announce useless lowest tier plans which are of no use to us. DOCSIS 3.0 is a great improvement for India. Virgin Media is doing great with it in UK (except ridiculous STM policies) Definitely the right step forward before fibre becomes compulsary for everyone due to growing data consumption needs.

@iChaitanya, the plans are as follows:

Take a look at the link as pasting the plans makes this haywire.
As you can see the FUP is not great but it serves my purpose. I would put my usage into the following broad categories:
1. General browsing - largely on the iPad and sometimes on the computer
2. Streaming Youtube on my TV - love the BBC documentaries on youtube. This is probably my largest data consumption, but given the amount of time I spend at home (which is 4 to 5 awake hours), this only translates into actual consumption on weekends.
3. App downloads - One would probably put this into general browsing but given the size of the apps now a days, this can add up to quite a bit. Of course, there is the occasional upgrade to Win 8.1 but most other apps are now between 25 to 50 MB and I just hate waiting once I have decided to download an app. Call me impatient but this is where I love the faster downloads.
My typical data consumption on my 5Mpbs line used to be between 7 to 8 GB per month. For me the FUP is way over limit. I spend little time consuming data at home (I do in my office, which is a completely different story) but whatever time I do spend, I don't want to wait. Whether it is an app downloading or steaming video, speed is of the essence for me and this works just beautifully. I continue to retain my MTNL ADSL but have kept the lowest possible plan of Rs 250 for 1 GB. I expect to use it only in an emergency!
@kickass and sanke1, if I may ask, what is it that you need to download that takes your FUP needs to 150GB pm? That's 5GB a day! You need a business connection not a home connection.

We are extremely heavy users. I myself refuse to watch youtube in anything lower than 720p. Most of my downloads are 720p TV shows.Hathway's current plans are not going to cut it.

Makes sense then for you not to be on this. If Hathway increases the FUP, I will let you guys know.

same here. i watch tv shows in 720p min. movies are either 720p or 1080p . plus the same line is used for work too.
