Easier business conditions?! I dont think so. (May be if u r an american, chinese or muslim but not otherwise)

Plus ur comparison based on GDP is wrong. You are not considering the fact that GDP difference of 26$ is huge amount (its actually 43$, $1032 Ind and $989 Pak) because population of India is 10 times population of Pakistan.

Gross GDP of Pak is 165 billion $ whereas India's is 1.16 trillian $ (source: Google)

I have no idea how u can consider it roughly same.

Btw GDP per capita is used to show living standards and NOT business conditions.

A good part of india's bureaucracy is still untouched and left that way. Im not exactly sure of the purposes it serves. The govt is not in a hurry. Those willing to make money are ready to fish in these waters.

Clearly the world-bank thinks otherwise if they are able to rank Pakistan so much higher on the world scale than India.

Try typing the same in to Google - that's where I got my results from. To take the example of NZ versus Australia where the GDP per Capita is US$47370 for Australia vs $30439, I would have to say that a $26 or $43 difference between 2 neighbouring countries is not too significant overall: THAT is how I can consider it to be roughly the same.

Now, can we please get off politics and back on topic?

Pakistan must be doing something right if they can offer faster, cheaper internet access with unlimited usage.

It may have worked well for the Britishers, but these days it should be a lot easier to do business than it was 50 years ago.

The basic disagreement flows from the fact that Matt is talking about GDP per capita while Amish is referring to GDP. Obviously our GDP is much larger than Pak's but the per capita is suppressed because of our huge population.Bottom line: Matt you want to do business in India not Pakistan. You must have some reason for doing that other than the fact the missus is Indian. In other words, the difficulty of starting up something here is probably more than compensated for by projected profitability. Moreover once you cut through the redtape and are on the other side, that itself is an entry barrier for your future competitors.

Yes, I know he was talking abt per capita... but my point is he was considering 26 or 43 to be minor difference, forgetting that Indian population is way too large compared to Pakistan. And comparing Aus-NZ with Ind-Pak is just joke. India is poor country, so is Pakistan. Infact I wud say difference of 47000 and 30000 betn Aus-NZ is not much, considering NZ is so TINY when compared to Australia. Its as if its part of Australia itself.

True, but all things considered, I could have met with the same sort of enthusiasm in Pakistan - and faced fewer problems. Unlike MTNL/BSNL, PCTL leases out it's infrastructure to those wanting to use it.

Amish, we are talking per person. $26 or $43 (depending on which stats you take) per person per year is *really marginal* and in that respect puts India and Pakistan on fairly equal ground salary-wise (overall average, anyway - of course India has more Billionaires but we digress).

Wait a minute, were we not just comparing India (>1 billion people) and Pakistan (~166mn people)? Geographically speaking, yes, NZ is tiny compared to Australia but, poor country, rich country - that alone shouldn't explain an average wage difference of US$17k a year per person (+56%)! The difference in wages between NZ and Australia is more comparable to India vs Nepal/Bangladesh (about +120%) or India vs Afghanistan (in real numbers, $700ish) than it is to India vs Pakistan (~2-4%).

NZ has 4.2mn people, Australia has 21.4mn people - that's a similar ballpark in population discrepancy between to what is between India and Pakistan: (1.14b vs 166mn = 6.86x pop, 21.4mn vs 4.2mn = 5.1x), and yet nor can this explain why there is such a discrepancy in wages. You just can't argue with statistics.

Original point: 1. Pakistan easier to do business in (so says the world bank, and unless you have personal experience otherwise, it might be a good idea to pipe down).
Secondary point: 2. Pakistan has better broadband in many respects compared to India (prices, no FUP, unbundled local loop, cheap peering et al ad infinitum).

You can argue about GDP and whatnot all you like but these two facts remain true for the time being, so CAN WE PLEASE GET BACK ON TO THE TOPIC OF BROADBAND AND DISCUSS AT THE VERY LEAST WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO FIX BROADBAND IN INDIA.

You are surely welcome to start up a thread in another section of the site to discuss GDP etc, so if future posts in this thread do not contain information relevant to Broadband, I will delete them.

I think I remember reading about this late last year from the builder of one of the first developments to use this system. I think there is nobody to connect them to properly fast services. It's very much a step in the right direction and we do want to sponsor the same in all new developments everywhere - places like this would probably be first in line in a new service-area to receive our services.

also, just saw this discussion on NDTV news channel that took place on october 5th on the condition of broadband in India, one guy was from TRAI,another from Reliance and the 3rd guy was from the company i posted abt above, interesting discussion, one of the points discussed was abt TRAI recommending 4Mbps as minimum speed

,sorry, but its in Hindi -

4mbit/s as a minimum is probably overkill for the time being - 1 or 2 should be sufficient and then it should be up to the operators to best each other on speed and price.

At least, in an ideal world/in a country that is not India, this would be true - this is what competition is *supposed* to do (it worked well enough for voice services).

Whatever regulations come in to play, the operators would have the following choices:
1. Upgrade minimum speeds to the ISP node to be 4mbit/s (easy enough, but that wouldn't likely translate to be 4mbit/s to the real-world).
2. As #1, but cease offering unlimited plans at any level.
3. Stop advertising their services as Broadband, rendering the regulation completely useless.
