hi to all herei need some useful information from ui am living in a village at punjab and i want to establish a wifi network in my village in the radius of about 0.5 km and i want to share my bsnl broadband connection with 10 friends.1 can u suggest me is it possible with wifi 2 if it possible then what i have to do to built a wifi network3 also suggest some wifi routers/repeaters which can support such type of network4 how much it will cost for us.thanks

1.Please give details of your present setup. ISP provider/ modem/router used.No of computers desktop and laptop you have. 2 Since you have a broadband connection, ( and GPRS give details )how many of your friends can opt for another connection.?or2a. All of you want to share a single BB connection ?2b. Any tall building in the village ? ( 10 friend's house only)3.about 20 to 30 meters radius possible500 Meters radius is not possible normally. thanks for the replyat present i am using bsnl bb plan 750 home on my laptop and i have a modem given by bsnl.at present i am the single user of bb.there will be 9 desktops and one laptop in the networkwe are going to share a single bb connection but we can upgrade this to home 1350 plan which has more bandwidth(512 kbps)normally two story buildings are present in the village(two fo my friends has two story building)what is buffalo wifi router?please give the details how to establish this type of network,thanks

(D) do you have wireless LAN adaptor in your laptop ?
((E) Any wireless router used. Preferably located at a higher height gives additional range .
(F)and You may have to use an additional antenna.
(G) First test wifi in your location.
Take the laptop to different locations and test.
(H) simple test
Call/Page your cordless Base station with your
cordless handset. ( if latest 2.4GHz model better )
Keep the base unit near a window and at a higher height.
How far you can use it ?
(Cellphone can be used for the test communications)

Harpinder Please be aware that what you are trying to do might be considered illegal by your ISP. Having a wired/wireless network is not illegal, but paying for one connection and sharing it with 3rd parties is. I'm not 100% sure about this, but it is better to know the facts before taking the decision. But what the hell, this is India. Sab chalta hai .....
mmm. well it might not be illegal if he is sharing with people he is giving control to. i mean. cafes and Hotels allow sharing of internet connectivity. at my place, i share the same connection on 4 different devices using wi-fi. if any friend arrives with a laptop or a pda, he also gets to use my internet on his device. 
if he is charging for sharing his internet using a personal account. that might be problematic.but unless, he shows it as a business income, that is not likely to be a problem again.

After I wrote the post, I check with the network guy in my office. As an organisation, we are definitely prohibited from doing something like this. I remember a similar discussion with my neighbour a few months back about this. According to him, the end user contracts for home subscribers (which nobody ever bothers to read) have this clause as well. Actually makes sense. If people started doing this, an ISP would end up selling only a fraction of the connections they could potentially sell. All this is in theory, of course. I doubt if any ISP has the energy to monitor all this ... Come to think of it - is it technically feasible? Are there equiments available to monitor and detect WiFi connections, its source etc......
