I will give you an example of not reading the rules. A relative rang me up one day & asked me if my net connection was working the conversation was something like this
SHE: is your net connection working.
ME: Yes
SHE: But mine is not working (Am I supposed to be responsible for that? I wonder)
ME: did you make any changes at your end.
SHE: No. after a lots of questions asked she finally admits that she changed her password for security. :wall:
ME: did you do it in both places.
SHE: WHAT DO YOU MEAN BOTH PLACES?
ME: (getting tired of this by now). I tell her that its got to be done on the server side thru MTNL Mumbai - Broadband Web Self Care then on the modem.
SHE: Nobody told me that. :readtherules:
ME: Didn’t you see the instructions on the site?
SHE: what site! :O
ME: I tell her.
SHE: BUT NOW I CAN’T CONNECT TO THE NET SO HOW CAN I DO THAT. CAN YOU HELP ME TO GET IT WORKING.
ME: I ask her which modem she has bought it’s also a D-Link modem but a much later model (I can’t remember which one). I ask her to ring up 1504 & ask them to reset the password from their side. ( I had to spend 5 minutes why it has to be done). I also tell her to see the instructions given in the user guide found on the site on how it’s to be done.
SHE: Grumbling that I had not helped her slams the phone down.
ME Sweating profusely from this exercise, felt like banging my head for trying to help such yokels. Maybe I should have been actually rude.
:iomg:

This has actually happened to me.

Can't blame such users who seem to be a novice or a new user, MTNL should also educate these kind of people by either providing pamphlets during Installation day or mail them appropriately.

I don’t see why MTNL has to take the blame for this, if you see post #46 it highlights the level of ignorance of the customers who then start blaming MTNL for their faults.
Remember if you are a customer then its your responsibility to see what is available from the MTNL its in your own interest. Cant expect them to spoon feed the customer. I think its time we take responsibility for our acts of omission or commission. BTW This person is an IT person :D

ROFL:rofl:

@socrates - I can totally empathize with you. Haven't really had such an experience with Internet connection but have burnt my fingers a few times after recommending PCs. In the last few years I have become wiser and never recommend based on my capabilities but rather see what are the abilities of the potential buyer.
If the person is smart enough, I can help him to specify and get a good PC assembled at a great price. If it is someone who is likely to call me each time he screws up while using his system, I always recommend a branded system of a company whom he can get service from.
If we do favours for our friends and relatives by recommending what is good, they always firmly wrap the responsibility of the decision around our neck and expect us to solve their problems.
Were you the one who recommended MTNL? For such people Airtel is best among the mainstream. Even better in some cases is the local cablewala's internet where people at such a level can get help to overcome minor ignorance related issues.
You final sentence BTW This person is an IT person
was a major shocker.

Yup I agree, the ignorance & arrogance go in equal measure with this person.
Recently a friend wanted to have wifi as his sons wanted it. So he asked me for advise so I told him ‘lets check if MTNL has the stock of wifi routers if not you can decide if you want to wait for their h/w or buy your own’. So we met the SDE of our area who told us frankly that it was out of stock but would be available in 15 days, my friend decided to wait for the MTNL h//w. so that saved me the trouble of going with him to Lamington Rd & then installing it for him :)
BTW his level of computer knowledge is that of pygmy Guran from Phantom comics (except the grass skirt is missing) :O
After 17 days it was installed, he requested me to come & supervise as I had told him about the password security should be taken seriously & not the usual Ram barose style. I won’t mention the sloppy method that’s MTNL uses to provide the initial wifi password as it might give people ideas on hacking others wifi, setup by MTNL. A few days later his computer was badly crippled by a Trojan attack & guess what my friend tells me. 'I think it’s the wifi installation which has done this; I should not have gone in for it'. Later his elder son quietly tells me that his younger bro uses torrents & that could have caused this problem. It took me a whole day to sort out the problem (it was a Saturday) & set thing right.

2 days ago another friend was asking me, if he gets the computer parts from lamington rd. can i assemble a new PC for him?
lol
i said no (with appropriate 'reasons')

You should get paid for your services !!This is the purticular reason that these kinds of threads/forums exists.Regards,Karan

 Sometimes you cant refuse friends without causing offense. Believe me I have given, all my friends the url of this site but some are lazy or even ignorant of basic tech knowledge so they say cant understand anything posted here. But I think the take the easier way of just tapping a friend.
