I wonder how many people are aware that they are going to watch distorted pictures when they invest tens of thousands of rupees for their LCD/LED TV's. There is no way out of this until Broadcasters broadcast in 16:9.
This is the main reason i'm still sticking to my foreign bought, 2 decade old crt which still has better colour to my eyes than latest LCD. But ppl don't like pillar boxing ie vertical black bars, they bought this LCD so they get used to the stretched image. Some of the better LCDs have better display engines so its gets easier.

You can utilise the widescreen format of LCD TV for watching DVD movies (including donwloaded movies); if you set the TV option to 16:9 in the the DVD player.
Exactly, so the ppl that get these TVS must be downloading lots of shows from internet or buying movies. Or in the south there are a few regional channels that broadcast in this ratio. If you want english then your choices are limited, discovery, NG, movies now & maybe espn (cant remember which sports channel).

When will we switch to 16:9 ? will only happen once HD becomes more prevalent, one day soon, who knows when.

I didn't bother reading up, but are they doing it at the STB level or before uplinking?

^no way they need 50 tp just for that they have like 15 or 18 tp which bcast sd channels. So it is stb level uplinking.

Ya this is actually a very good idea... this is known as video upscalling. this is also not a bad idea at all. Video upscalling was available only in AV receivers and DVD players but it is good that it is coming in STBs. Programs r recorded in 570i... and converting it to 570p is easy.. the only thing STB has to do is upscale it to HD quality to 720p.... it is just 1.5 times higher then SD. Upscalling the content to 1080p is the most difficult thing to do which is Full HD and this hardware will cost u a lot.
