Sorry, but i can't understand you. What's a router?
Bsnl is not providing modems anymore, that's why i decided to buy it from a retail shop. .. Now your post has just confused me....

Ok, so I'll explain it in very simple terms. A router is like a distribution point. You've seen a modem right ? Its got this LAN port. One end of the LAN cable is then plugged into this port. Now, you've got the other free end, right ? This can be plugged into a computer. But what if you've got to distribute your internet connection among a number of machines. This is where a router comes into play. Now instead of plugging the free end of the LAN cable into a computer you plug it into the wan port of the router. The router has a number of LAN ports, say x, which can be used to connect x number of machines via a cat5/LAN cable. Additionally a wifi router can convert your internet into wireless signals. I called up the jto, he told me that they still stock modems/routers over at my place's exchange.The rest has been explained by essbebe.

If you asked me to confirm what connection i use now, thinking how i connect to the web to make the posts here, i should say, i'm through my Sony ericsson w595 on GPRS. I'm planning to take a broadband connection. So,1. I've a Bsnl landline connection.2. I'm planning to buy a sony ericsson Xperia ray smart phone so, i need an internet connection that should be accessible through my PC (which doesn't have any wireless recievers; only has an ethernet port on the motherboard) and the proposed Sony Ericsson Xperia ray (which is a wifi enabled handset.). So, what kind of modem should i buy? Should i need a router as well to connect the Xperia ray to the modem?3. The range i'd like the network to cover is LESS than 60ft.I don't know the difference between a wifi modem and wifi router. That's the reason of all this mayhem! Its like this either you buy a adsl2+ modem seperately and then a D-Link or TP-Link wifi router. Or you buy a modem/wifi router combo (something like an all in one).Take it like this, the modem converts your internet into something that can be read by the computer, a router merely distributes that converted signal.
