Pollution Problem in Delhi NCR

Reimpose odd-even if pollution reaches ‘emergency’ level: SC

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered reimposition of the ban on private vehicles in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on the basis of odd-even registration numbers if the air pollution level reached the “emergency” level.

The air pollution level would be categorised as “emergency” if the particulate matter (PM) 2.5 exceeded 300 microgram per cubic metre (MCM) or the PM 10 crossed the 500 MCM mark and remained at this level for 48 hours.

Other steps that can be taken if pollution reaches alarming levels:
  • Ban entry of Diesel trucks into Delhi except those carrying essential commodities
  • Closure of schools
  • Ban on use of generators
  • Increase parking charges by 3-4 times
  • Ban on use of coal/firewood in Hotels/eateries
  • Schools would be asked to suspend outdoor activities/sports events
  • Restriction on use of kerosene/diesel gensets
  • Action against visibly polluting vehicles, industries and burning of garbage.
